Super Bowl Pick: San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
3 of 3
It became apparent in the moments following the NFC Championship Game a season ago that the San Francisco 49ers were a Super Bowl-caliber team in need of one or two pieces to get them over the line.
They got those pieces in 2022 in the form of a trade for running back Christian McCaffrey and the emergence of rookie quarterback Brock Purdy.
Both have played remarkably well.
Purdy has not been affected by the high-pressure situation he suddenly finds himself in, completing 67.1 percent of his throws for 13 touchdowns and just four interceptions. His Week 18 performance against Arizona was near-flawless and reflected a player whose confidence in his skill set and in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense is growing with every game.
McCaffrey has been the spark the offense needed, a juggernaut capable of breaking a big run for a score or taking a screen pass 70 yards to the end zone. His burst of pace is special, and the fact that he can benefit the team on the ground or through the air makes him an invaluable weapon.
Coupled with a smothering defense that allowed 20-plus points just twice during their 10-game win streak, their play makes the 49ers a team built to win the Super Bowl right now.
And they will, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch from their Super Bowl LIV showdown, in which Patrick Mahomes led the AFC champions back from a 10-point deficit to win by 11.
Having learned from the past, the Niners will pressure Mahomes into making the same mistakes that have thwarted his hopes of a second title in the last two seasons and capitalize by finding the end zone.
The Chiefs defense is better than some may realize, ranking in the top 10 against the pass and the run. It will make life difficult for Purdy, especially the underrated Chris Jones.
Mahomes will make plays while Travis Kelce will threaten to dominate, but the scheming, speed and execution of the Niners will see Shanahan claim his ring and serve as the coronation of Purdy as one of the NFL's stars of the future.
