Packers' Rooting Guide for 2022 NFL Draft Implications of Week 10

Alex BallentineNov 11, 2022

The most ardent Green Bay Packers fans might be clinging to the notion of turning things around in 2022, but the more realistic segment of the fanbase is more likely to be YouTubing 2023 NFL draft prospects.

With the team's 15-9 loss to the Detroit Lions last week, the team has hit rock bottom. It now has the longest losing streak in the NFL and would be drafting 10th if the season ended today.

It would be Green Bay's highest draft selection since taking B.J. Raji with the ninth pick in 2009.

So, while Packers fans are much more accustomed to starting to take a look at the playoff picture right about now, others will be keeping track of where they are slated to pick in April.

Here's a guide for what to watch for as we head into the meat of the Week 10 schedule.

Where the Packers Stand

As previously noted, the Packers would be on the clock at No. 10 if the draft were held today. But that's with quite a bit to be figured out.

They would be the last of five 3-6 teams to pick based on their strength of schedule, based on the 58 percent winning percentage of all the opponents on their schedule.

The Broncos, Rams and Browns are all right behind the Packers with 3-5 records since they have already had their bye week. Coincidentally, those three picks are all owned by different teams (Seahawks, Lions and Texans, respectively) so the fact that Green Bay at least has its pick should make it feel better about the situation.

Ironically, the last two players to be taken with the 10th overall selection were wide receivers: Garrett Wilson (2022) and DeVonta Smith (2021). Either would be really helpful for the Packers right about now.

Lions at Bears, 1 p.m. ET

It's going to be tough for Packers fans to root for either of the NFC North teams in this game, but they should be hoping they are picking in front of the Bears for draft purposes. That means holding their nose and rooting for Chicago.

The Lions stunned the Packers last week, and there's a chance they can ride the momentum of that win to continued success, but where they pick is probably immaterial to the Packers. They are likely moving on from Jared Goff through the draft.

Meanwhile, the Bears are going to be looking to help Justin Fields with either an offensive lineman or wide receiver. In other words, they could be in the market for the same thing as Green Bay.

Saints at Steelers, 1 p.m. ET

Much like the Packers, the Saints and Steelers are two teams that aren't used to thinking about the draft this time of year.

New Orleans made some all-in moves this offseason by rolling its cap debt over another year and trading future picks for more selections in the 2022 draft.

Pittsburgh probably had some idea it could be in for a tough season when it drafted Kenny Pickett.

Once again, the Packers should be rooting for the team that doesn't already have its quarterback. The Saints don't have their young signal-caller to build around yet, so it's the Steelers that should be the concern for Green Bay.

Cardinals at Rams, 4:25 p.m. ET

This is a tough one because the Cardinals are one of the teams tied with the Packers by record. But the Rams are just behind at 3-5.

Essentially, Green Bay is going to benefit from the team that stands the best chance of digging itself out of the hole it's in and goes from chasing a top-10 pick to a playoff spot.

At this point, that's probably the Rams. They are already a half-game ahead of the Cardinals and already have a win over their division rival. Ultimately, it's better to put your faith in Sean McVay than Kliff Kingsbury.
