Top Teams to Watch
Argentina
Lionel Messi is arguably the greatest soccer player of all time, but the one major accomplishment missing from his resume is a World Cup win.
The Paris Saint-Germain star will look to change that this year, when he leads an Argentina team that is considered one of the betting favorites to win it all.
At 35 years of age, Messi's career is winding down, and he confirmed recently this will be his final opportunity to win a World Cup, noting that the 2022 edition will be his last as a player.
Argentina has twice won the World Cup, but not since 1986, although it has reached the final since then.
The most recent occurrence came in 2014 when Argentina fell 1-0 to Germany. Messi was spectacular at that World Cup, scoring four times and winning the Golden Ball as the top player in the tournament.
It wasn't enough to secure a third World Cup win for Argentina, but the squad may be inspired to finish the job this time around, knowing it will be its talisman's last opportunity.
France
After winning the World Cup four years ago, France will look to become the first nation to win two in a row since Brazil in 1958 and 1962.
The main factor working in Les Bleus' favor is the presence of Kylian Mbappé, who was the driving force behind the team's success four years ago.
The 23-year-old tied for second in goals at the 2018 World Cup with four and won the FIFA Young Player Award in the process.
Mbappé scored the fourth and final goal for France in its 4-2 win over Croatia in the final, and he has continued to improve in the four years since then for PSG at the club level.
France is considered a top contender again this year, but it is facing some adversity entering the tournament, as midfielder Paul Pogba has been ruled out due to a knee injury.
There was some hope that the 29-year-old would be able to return in time after undergoing knee surgery, but France will be without the Juventus star's steady presence.
Like Mbappe, Pogba scored in the World Cup final four years ago, underlining his ability to perform on the big stage, but others will now be tasked with stepping up in his absence.
USA
Four years removed from the deflating experience of having to watch the World Cup from home, the United States is back in business.
With a roster comprised of young, talented players such as Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, Giovanni Reyna and others, Team USA easily qualified for the 2022 World Cup after crashing out of qualifying in 2018.
Aside from reaching the semifinals of the first World Cup in 1930, the United States' best finish was a trip to the quarterfinals in 2002. Its most recent success came in both 2010 and 2014 when the team made it to the round of 16.
Considering how much talent the current squad has, reaching the last 16 is likely considered the bare-bones goal of the team, although it would love to go even further.
From an international perspective, the United States isn't considered much of a threat beyond potentially making it out of a tough group that includes England, Wales and Iran.
Since there is a great deal of inexperience among the squad when it comes to playing in the World Cup, the youngsters have the potential to take teams by surprise, and that could make them a dangerous opponent in Qatar.
