College Football Odds Week 5: Over-Under and Picks Against the Spread for Top 25

Joe TanseySep 29, 2022

The Big 12 may end up having the most entertaining conference-title fight among the power-five leagues in college football.

The Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns suffered conference losses last week, and it may not be long before the rest of the league drops perfect marks.

The two teams that beat the Big 12's most recognizable programs meet in Week 5 in what could be a low-scoring affair in which the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Kansas State Wildcats struggle to get going after emotional victories.

Saturday's marquee game in the Big 12 will add a loss to the resume of one of the other league title contenders. The Baylor Bears, who are 1-0 in the Big 12, play host to the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

Baylor and Oklahoma State met in last season's Big 12 Championship Game. That matchup was a sign of the chaos the Big 12 can produce, and the winner of that game may surge in front of other programs on the list of Big 12 favorites.

Texas Tech and Kansas State both come into Saturday's clash in the prototypical college football letdown spot.

Texas Tech is coming off its first big win under first-year head coach Joey McGuire. The Red Raiders beat Texas in overtime at home.

Meanwhile, Kansas State went into Norman, Oklahoma, and defeated the Sooners for the third time in four years.

Both teams won high-scoring games a week ago, but their head-to-head clash is ripe for the under to hit.

If you take away the emotional spots, there are plenty of numbers that suggest the under is the best bet in Manhattan, Kansas.

Kansas State is 7-3 to the under in its last 10 games, and it held its first three opponents of 2022 to under 20 points. The Wildcats only gave up 17 in a surprising loss to the Tulane Green Wave.

Texas Tech struggled to score in its lone road game, a 27-14 loss to NC State. The Red Raiders scored over 30 points in regulation once in the last three games.

The Red Raiders could take Deuce Vaughn out of the contest. They averaged 99.8 rushing yards conceded per game in September. Tech could also limit the running potential of Adrian Martinez, who had 148 yards and four scores on the ground against Oklahoma.

If Texas Tech limits K-State's quarterback-running back duo, it has a chance to even pick up a road victory, but points may be hard to come by for the visitors.

Kansas State gave up 15.8 points per game in September. The Wildcats conceded 29 points in their first three contests and held Oklahoma to 10 or fewer points in three of the four quarters in Norman last weekend.

Oklahoma State sat at home while chaos reigned over the Big 12 last week.

The Cowboys should realize that the conference is more wide-open than first expected since Oklahoma and Texas already have league defeats. One of those teams will have two league losses by the end of next week.

Oklahoma State quietly put together an impressive September in which it scored 155 points over three games.

The Cowboys did not play an opposition that posed a high level of difficulty, but it is worth complimenting them for getting the jobs done with little trouble.

Baylor is coming off a hard-fought road win over the Iowa State Cyclones. The Bears have played a tougher schedule than OK State. They also went on the road and lost in overtime to the BYU Cougars.

Oklahoma State could play into the emotional aspect of the matchup since it was inches short from beating Baylor in the 2021 Big 12 Championship Game.

OK State quarterback Spencer Sanders should have some personal motivation to beat Baylor after he threw seven interceptions against the Bears defense in two games.

Sanders has 10 touchdown passes and one interception this season, and if he cleans up the turnovers, he could increase the Cowboys' chances of winning the Big 12.

A more disciplined Sanders could be the difference-maker for the Cowboys as they try to put their mark on the wide-open Big 12 title race.
