NBA Rumors: Latest Buzz on Myles Turner, Buddy Hield, Jae Crowder Trades and More

Kristopher KnoxSep 23, 2022

We may be a week from the start of the 2022-23 NBA preseason, but teams are still wheeling and dealing.

On Thursday, the Utah Jazz dealt forward Bojan Bogdanović to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Kelly Olynyk and Saben Lee, per Tim Reynolds of the Associated Press. It's the latest move by a retooling Jazz franchise that sent Donovan Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier in September.

It's also unlikely to be the last move we see before the regular season kicks off on October 18.

With teams preparing for the preseason and the trade market still wide open, let's take a look at the latest NBA buzz.

The Los Angeles Lakers have been at the epicenter of trade rumors all offseason. They've been linked to Brooklyn Nets point guard Kyrie Irving, and there has been plenty of buzz about dealing Russell Westbrook.

For now, though, it appears Westbrook is in the Lakers' plans for the upcoming season.

"From what I understand now, they still see Russell Westbrook as a starter," ESPN's Ramona Shelburne told NBA Today (h/t Ashish Mathur of Heavy).

This doesn't mean Los Angeles isn't still weighing its options with the 33-year-old, though.

According to Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic, the Lakers have discussed a deal for Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner and guard Buddy Hield, but L.A. isn't interested in surrendering two unprotected first-round picks as part of the deal.

"I'm told the Lakers and Pacers did engage in some trade conversations this week and the Pacers' demand for two unprotected first-round picks … is just not appealing for the Lakers," Charania said during an appearance on Bally Sports' The Rally.

Los Angeles has 2027 and 2029 first-round picks at its disposal, but it seems it's not willing to part with them right now. If the Lakers do ultimately deal that draft capital, it will likely come after this season when they can get a feel for their post-Westbrook roster.

Of course, this may be a situation to keep an eye on as the trade deadline approaches, as trade demands could easily change for one side or the other.

Jae Crowder Would Welcome a Miami Return

The Phoenix Suns could be the next team to make a noteworthy trade. According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, they are currently active in trade negotiations.

"They are very active in this last week conducting business," he told NBA Today (h/t Jeremy Cluff of the Arizona Republic). "They're in trade negotiations right now. A lot of them are centered around Jae Crowder. Jae Crowder is a player who is available on the market right now."

Could Crowder's former team, the Miami Heat, be interested in reacquiring him? That remains to be seen, but according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald, the 32-year-old would be open to a Miami reunion.

"We hear Jae Crowder would welcome a return to the Heat," Jackson wrote.

As Jackson noted, though, finding a trade that would work for both Miami and Phoenix would be tricky. The Heat don't have many obvious trade candidates for a Crowder deal—Jackson mentioned Duncan Robinson, though the four years and $75 million remaining on his deal would be a tough sell—and may not be willing to part with a first-round pick.

In a vacuum, though, a trade would make sense for Miami. Crowder was part of the 2019-20 Heat squad that reached the NBA Finals, and he started 21 games that postseason. Last year with the Suns, he averaged 9.4 points and 5.3 rebounds while appearing in 67 regular-season games.

Obi Toppin Could See Increased Role This Season

The Heat and Lakers faced off in the 2020 NBA Finals, a place where the New York Knicks haven't been since the 1998-99 season. They have been to the playoffs only once in the last nine seasons.

The Knicks do have some intriguing young pieces in RJ Barrett and Mitchell Robinson, though, and they added Jalen Brunson this offseason. With Julius Randle and Evan Fournier also on the roster, they could make some noise in the East this season.

It would help tremendously if New York could get big contributions from 2020 eighth overall pick Obi Toppin.

The Dayton product played sparingly as a rookie—he averaged 11 minutes per game—but took a positive step last season. He appeared in 72 games with 10 starts and averaged 17.1 minutes, 9.0 points and 3.7 rebounds.

According to SNY's Ian Begley, the 24-year-old could have an even bigger role this year.

"I’ve heard that members of the coaching staff think Obi Toppin’s role could increase," he wrote. "That's a natural progression after Toppin’s play at the end of last season."

In his final five games last season, Toppin tallied 20, 20, 19, 35 and 42 points. In the right role, he could be a difference-maker for the Knicks this year. However, Begley noted that a bigger role might not necessarily mean a "significant minutes increase."

Toppin will likely continue to be a role player in New York, at least for as long as Randle remains in the lineup.
