Luis Suarez: Liverpool Has No Reason To Appeal 8-Match Ban Following FA Report

Nicholas GossDec 31, 2011

Liverpool FC has no reason to appeal the eight-match ban given to forward Luis Suarez for his racial abuse towards Manchester United left-back Patrice Evra because the Uruguayan star's evidence was found to be "unreliable" and "inconsistent" according to the Football Association's report.

Along with his match ban, Suarez was handed a £40,000 fine for racially abusing Evra in an incident during the two club's October 15 match at Anfield.

The following was mentioned in the FA's report which was released on Saturday:

"Mr. Evra was a credible witness. He gave his evidence in a calm, composed and clear way. It was, for the most part, consistent, although both he and Mr Suarez were understandably unable to remember every detail of the exchanges between them."

"Mr Suarez's evidence was unreliable in relation to matters of critical importance. It was, in part, inconsistent with the contemporaneous evidence, especially the video footage. For example, Mr Suarez said that he pinched Mr Evra's skin in an attempt to defuse the situation. He also said that his use of the word 'negro' to address Mr Evra was conciliatory and friendly. We rejected that evidence."

There's no need for Suarez to fight his punishments. Liverpool desperately needs him on the pitch to help the club score goals and win important matches.

Suarez leads the club with five goals scored in the league, one ahead of Craig Bellamy whose two goals on Friday against Newcastle gave him four scores for the Reds this season. No one else has more than two league goals for the club thus far.

Eight matches is a long time to be without your most talented and best goal scorer, so Liverpool need Suarez to take his penalty and get back to the squad as soon as possible.

Liverpool have a chance to finish in the top four this season and secure Champions League qualification for next year, but that task is much more challenging if Suarez is going to have little impact on the club's success for the rest of the season.

The best thing to do for Suarez and Liverpool is to get his eight-match ban over with so he can return later in the campaign and help the club end the season strongly.

Wasting time and appealing the ban would be a foolish move for all parties involved.
