NBA Training Camps 2022: Start Dates, Schedules and Top Storylines to Watch

Jake RillSep 18, 2022

A little more than three months ago, Stephen Curry led the Golden State Warriors to the NBA title, guiding them past the Boston Celtics in a six-game series. Now, it's almost time for another season to begin.

The road to the 2022-23 NBA campaign is about to ramp up, as training camps will soon open around the league. For teams playing preseason exhibition games outside North America, camps will open Saturday. For the rest of the league, camps open Sept. 27.

After that, preseason contests will take place from Sept. 30-Oct. 14. Then, the regular season opens with a pair of matchups on Oct. 18—the Celtics will host the Philadelphia 76ers, while the Warriors will host the Los Angeles Lakers.

With the start of training camps on the horizon, here are some of the top storylines around the league.

Are the Warriors Set Up for More Championship Success?

There may have been a brief two-season hiatus, but the Warriors' dynasty may be back. After making the NBA Finals every year from 2015-19 (winning three championships during that stretch), Golden State missed the playoffs in two straight seasons from 2019-21. Then, it bounced back and won another title last season.

The Warriors didn't make any huge offseason moves, but they return a core featuring Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Andrew Wiggins and others. They also signed Donte DiVincenzo, who could be a valuable addition to their bench.

Can Golden State run it back and make yet another run to the NBA Finals? It could depend on the continued development of some of the Warriors' young players, such as Jonathan Kuminga, James Wiseman and Moses Moody.

If some of those less experienced players take big steps forward, Golden State may be set up for even more success not only this season but in years to come. If not, maybe the Warriors will start to regress a bit due to the ages of some of their roster cornerstones.

Of course, Curry remains one of the best players in the league. So it's also possible he'll single-handedly lead Golden State to a decent number of wins.

What's Going to Happen (or Not Happen) in Brooklyn?

It's been quite an unusual offseason for the Brooklyn Nets. Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving have been the subjects of so many trade rumors. Yet, neither has been moved. So at this point, they're both going to be on the Nets' roster to begin the 2022-23 season.

That could always change. But if it doesn't and both in fact remain in Brooklyn, it will be interesting to see what happens. Durant and Irving are both talented, but the Nets haven't made it past the second round of the playoffs since adding them. In fact, Brooklyn hasn't reached the Eastern Conference Finals since 2003, when it got to the NBA Finals.

The X-factor in the Nets' potential 2022-23 success is Ben Simmons. He hasn't played in an NBA game since June 20, 2021, and he's never suited up for Brooklyn since coming over from Philadelphia in the James Harden trade.

If Durant and Irving stay and play at an elite level and Simmons ends up fitting in well, then maybe the Nets will perform up to the expectations that a team with this much talent inevitably has. Or, things may not go well at all. Nobody can truly predict what will happen in Brooklyn this season and moving forward.

Which Offseason Moves Will Work out the Best?

Some big moves happened across the NBA this offseason. It's likely that not all of them will work out. But there's also a chance that many of them do.

The Celtics, coming off an appearance in the NBA Finals, acquired Malcolm Brogdon in a trade with the Indiana Pacers. That should make a strong Boston team even better, and it will likely again be a top championship contender.

The Utah Jazz traded Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves and Donovan Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers. So while Utah is now in a rebuilding phase, Minnesota and Cleveland (a pair of teams with solid showings last season) are even better positioned for runs to the playoffs.

Maybe moves that didn't garner quite as much attention will turn out to be steals. We won't know until the 2022-23 season begins to play out. But training camps and preseason games could start to give an indication of how players are jelling with their new teams.
