Bold Predictions for Dolphins' Individual Stat Leaders in 2022 NFL Season

Joe TanseyAug 31, 2022

The Miami Dolphins' offseason trade for Tyreek Hill was made to give the team multiple big-play threats in the offense to work into the AFC playoffs.

Hill is expected to be the star of the Miami offense, but he will have some competition for numbers throughout the season in the form of Jaylen Waddle.

After all, Waddle is a 100-catch, 1,000-receiver player from his rookie season. His production could get even better with Hill lining up alongside him for 17 games.

Waddle is the reason why Hill will not run away with the lead in all of the receiving stat categories, and there could even be a few in which Waddle wins over Hill.

The rest of the Miami offense is harder to figure out since it overhauled its running back room and then cut Sony Michel on the way down to the 53-man roster.

Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert and Myles Gaskin could all get important snaps, and it could be hard to figure out the top running back on a weekly basis.

Receptions: Jaylen Waddle

Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill have the same number of 100-reception seasons.

Each of Miami's top wide receivers produced a century mark in catches in 2021. Waddle hauled in 104 passes, while Hill had 111 receptions in his final season with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Hill is the main attraction in the Miami offense, but that also means he will get additional attention from opposing secondaries, which may lead to production limitation.

Waddle could be the No. 2 option for defenses to focus on for most of the season, and he will likely take advantage of the matchups against some No. 2 corners.

Waddle also has built-in on-field chemistry with Tua Tagovailoa from last season. Hill may take a game or two to fully nail down the connection between himself and his new quarterback.

Hill's injury history may also be a factor in determining which player has the most receptions. Hill played an entire season once in his career.

The former Kansas City wideout played 15 games in 2020 and 12 games in 2019. If he misses even one game in 2022, Waddle could explode for eight or nine catches and take the lead in what should be a close battle for the most receptions on the roster.

Rushing Yards: Raheem Mostert

Raheem Mostert has familiarity with how first-year head coach Mike McDaniel may split up the snaps at running back.

Mostert broke through in a crowded backfield in San Francisco to earn a pair of 100-carry seasons while McDaniel was on the team's staff.

Injuries derailed Mostert's 2021 campaign and allowed him to move away from the 49ers and join the Dolphins.

Mostert's experience within a season-long running back battle could help him remain consistent while fighting with Chase Edmonds and Myles Gaskin for snaps.

Edmonds has never had more than 600 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns in his four-year career.

Edmonds has been a solid producer during his time in the NFL, but he has not been trusted with the top running back responsibilities.

The former Arizona Cardinals running back could take charge in the running back room, but he is competing with a former No. 1 back who is used to competition and the system run by McDaniel.

Do not be surprised if Mostert takes over in certain games and beats out Edmonds to the team rushing total lead, which may be around 700-800 yards given the spread out carries and reliance on the passing game.

Tackles: Jevon Holland

A perfect combination of factors must come together for a safety to lead an NFL team in tackles.

Jevon Holland displayed the aggressiveness needed to be around the ball during his rookie season, and Miami's schedule could allow the safety to produce a high total of takedowns.

Holland was seventh on the Dolphins in tackles in 2021. He had 10 passes defended, seven quarterback hits, three tackles for loss and three fumble recoveries in addition to his 69 tackles.

The eye test watching Holland and his numbers from last season show that the second-year safety is a ball hawk.

Holland will be around the ball a ton in 2022, and he could make plenty of tackles in the secondary early in the campaign against Baltimore, Buffalo and Cincinnati.

If he performs well in those three games, Holland could gain the confidence to be around the ball even more and work his way up the team's tackle leaderboard.

Miami also has the Los Angeles Chargers, Green Bay and Minnesota on the schedule, all of whom are not scared to air the ball out.

The ball could be in the Miami secondary so much because of how their opponents play, and that could lead to Holland cruising past his rookie marks and becoming one of the most impactful safeties in football.
