Derek Lowe Unimpressed with Mets’ Offer

Kevin RozellJan 2, 2009

(Zell's Pinstripe Blog)

Derek Lowe was offered a three year $36MM offer from the Mets’. Mike Puma of the NY Post says Derek was “hardly overwhelmed” by the offer, and that is understandable. Think about it. If a guy like…let’s say…Miguel Batista can make $9.5 million last year, then shouldn’t Lowe make a lot more then that? Batista was horrible last year. He posted a record of 4-14 and a 6.26ERA.

Pitching is at a high demand right now and it isn’t very easy to come by. The league is watered down and the amount of quality pitchers out there seems to be lower then ever.

Even bad pitchers can make $8M+ nowadays. You see some really bad contracts given to pitchers who don’t even deserve it. Derek Lowe has been a very dependable pitcher over the years, and has put up impressive numbers. He deserves a lot more then what the Mets’ offered him.

If I was Derek Lowe..I would be disgusted with that offer as well. Lowe is seeking a four-year deal, and the Mets’ aren’t looking to give him that. I wonder if the Yankees will jump in at the last second if Pettitte doesn’t return.

“We don’t know with Boras,” a Met official said yesterday when asked about possible competition for Lowe.

“It’s hard to figure with [Boras]. He’s always got these anonymous teams.”

That is assuming, of course, that the Yankees aren’t Boras’ “mystery” team for Lowe.

Richie Sexson news from rotoworld.com:

The Baltimore Sun reports that the Orioles have talked with Richie Sexson.

rotoworld’s take:Aubrey Huff doesn’t really need a platoon partner, but the Orioles could view Sexson as an alternative to Lou Montanez at designated hitter. He’s no longer a starting-caliber player, but Sexson remains an asset against left-handed pitching and will likely be cheap.
