Brock Lesnar Retires: Why We Will See Brock Lesnar Again in 2012

G DDec 31, 2011

In arguably the biggest fight of his life, Brock Lesnar entered the Octagon looking to make a statement against UFC's newest addition, Alistair Overeem.

Unfortunately for Lesnar and his fans, things didn't go as planned.

Instead, just over one minute into Round 1, Lesnar found himself in a world of trouble as he endured a vicious knee from Overeem.

Lesnar appeared to shed off the knee and continued in his heavyweight war. However, just seconds later, Overeem winded up and unleashed yet another knee that connected to the midsection of Lesnar, dropping him to the ground.

Lesnar then covered up as Overeem began teeing off on him as those in attendance at the MGM Grand Garden Arena were about to witness the end of an historical 2011.

But, it wasn't until after Lesnar was finished that the biggest news broke as the former WWE superstar announced that he would be stepping away from the sport for good.

Lesnar officially retired.

Fans across the globe were less than gracious to receive the news as the living sensation announced it was the last time fans would see him inside the Octagon.

However, even with Lesnar announcing his retirement, fans shouldn't be too quick to jump the gun. When the rubber meets the road, Lesnar is still in contract with UFC President Dana White and the organization.

While Lesnar could certainly up and leave his agreed-upon contract, fans shouldn't be surprised to see the massive heavyweight fighting again as soon as 2012.

Why?

Plain and simple, for the love of the sport.

Despite frequent battles with diverticulitis, Lesnar promised he would be at full health in his return against Overeem.

If in fact Lesnar is at full health, there's no reason we won't see him again when the new year rolls around. As we've seen with previous stars, it's very rare that a martial artist with as much fame and fortune as Lesnar has can walk away from the sport.

Similar to Randy Couture, it's likely Lesnar will take time away from the Octagon only to realize he still has what it takes to compete at the highest level of MMA.

If Lesnar's health is up to par, there's no reason why we won't see him battling it out at some point in 2012.
