UFC 141 Results: Jimy Hettes Opens Eyes with Dominating Win over Nam Phan
If people didn't know who Jimy Hettes was before Friday night, they certainly know who he is now. He went to town on Nam Phan at UFC 141, a bout that opened the pay-per-view main card with a bang.
Phan never really stood a chance. He came out looking to establish a rhythm, but Hettes was much more aggressive. He quickly got Phan on the ground, and that pretty much set the tone for the rest of the first round.
When Phan was able to get up, Hettes was able to get him back down again. With Phan's head exposed, Hettes let his fists fly, bludgeoning Phan over and over again.
For a few seconds, the fight looked like it was going to end right then and there, but Phan somehow managed to maintain consciousness, and he was even able to get back on his feet.
But only temporarily. Shortly before the end of the first round, Phan was on the ground again and was taking punches again. When the bell rang, he was bleeding pretty heavily.
In retrospect, it's pretty amazing that Phan was able to survive Hettes' onslaught, and he deserves no shortage of credit for being able to do so. He could have easily succumbed.
The second round saw more of the same. Hettes quickly got Phan on the ground and went to ground and pound. Phan once again managed to escape and actually seemed to have a shot to gain an advantage a short while later, but Hettes wouldn't let him have it. He just kept pressing his attack, pushing Phan to the brink once again.
Unfortunately for Phan, the first two rounds did nothing to tire Hettes. He kept coming in the third, and quickly got Phan to the ground once again. The pattern started all over again, and the round came to a close with Phan taking blows.
Needless to say, it was an easy call for the refs. Phan somehow still had his wits, but he left the Octagon as the loser of a unanimous decision.
As for Hettes, all you can say is, "Wow." He came into the bout as a relative unknown, but he absolutely owned Phan. If he can dominate a fight like that, you obviously have to wonder just how far he can go in the featherweight division.
If there is one thing to be concerned about, it's the possibility that we saw nothing more than a good fighter beating up on a mediocre fighter. That doesn't make Hettes a bad fighter, but it doesn't necessarily make him a great fighter.
We won't really know that until Hettes comes up against a great fighter. In that eventuality, the aggressiveness and wildness that he showed against Phan could be his undoing. Hettes' style is fun to watch, but it is exploitable.
Still, it seems Hettes is indeed ready to take the next step in UFC. He's won both of his fights, both in impressive fashion.
And after a fight like he just had, UFC should be more than willing to showcase Hettes.
