Predicting the Headlines to Emerge After WWE SummerSlam 2022
SummerSlam has long been WWE’s second-most important live event of the year, and the 2022 edition is shaping up to make major headlines.
With the NFL season fast approaching and a fall season of new television shows on the docket, WWE needs to create legitimate excitement. The key to the company’s success for the rest of the year will be capitalizing on the momentum it creates at the July 30 pay-per-view.
Here are the headlines fans should expect to see coming out of SummerSlam.
Who Can Stop Roman Reigns?
When WWE booked Roman Reigns to defend his Undisputed WWE Universal Championship in a Last Man Standing match against Brock Lesnar, it claimed the battle would be the last between the two familiar rivals.
While there is always a chance Vince McMahon and Co. book a swerve and have the title change hands, Reigns has made it nearly 700 days as champion and likely won’t lose at SummerSlam while he still has The Usos and Paul Heyman by his side.
So that begs the question: Who will eventually stop The Tribal Chief's reign?
The most likely answer would be Drew McIntyre at the Clash at the Castle event in Cardiff, Wales on September 3 when the challenger would hold a home-field advantage.
With the UK crowd in a frenzy to see a title change, allowing McIntyre to defeat Reigns would give the Scottish Superstar the coronation he never received upon winning his first world title during the pandemic.
The Usos could lose their titles at SummerSlam, causing The Bloodline to start showing cracks in the armor and setting the stage for problems among the family before the September showcase.
With Lesnar out of the way and the stage set for a hero’s welcome, McIntyre needs to defeat Reigns and become the next world champion.
Ronda Rousey Turns Heel
Since returning to WWE Programming to the cheers of the audience, Ronda Rousey has been booked as a babyface. With uninspired promos and lackluster booking decisions, the WWE Universe has slowly soured on the experiment.
It’s time for WWE Creative to allow The Baddest Woman on the Planet to show her edgier side and let her unleash her fury on the mic and in the ring on the entire SmackDown women’s division.
After Liv Morgan cashed in her newly won Money in the Bank briefcase to steal Rousey’s championship, the former MMA Superstar simply hugged the new champion and walked away. At SummerSlam, she should systematically dismantle the champ and win back her title.
By stealing away the title run most fans believe Morgan deserves, and doing so in brutal, lopsided fashion, Rousey would receive a chorus of boos from the crowd. As she basks in the moment, she should cut a scathing promo running down the WWE Universe.
With a genuine excitement for a monster heel run from one of the most dangerous women on the planet, Rousey showing her "true" colors and becoming the character she was born to portray will be one of the biggest stories coming out of SummerSlam.
John Cena Foils Theory’s Plan
When wrestling fans look back on SummerSlam 2022, one thing they will never forget is the unfortunate series of events that befell Mr. Money in the Bank, Theory.
After losing to Bobby Lashley in a United States Championship match, likely due to interference from Dolph Ziggler, Theory will be distraught until he remembers he can cash-in on the winner of the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship bout later in the night.
Regardless of whether Reigns is victorious or Lesnar shocks the WWE Universe and wins the titles, Theory should be ready with briefcase in hand to take advantage of the downed warriors.
As the 24-year-old goes to cash in his opportunity, though, John Cena’s music should hit. The eruption from the crowd and the surprise appearance by the WWE legend will distract the young Superstar.
Cena should then attack him and begin a long-term feud between the two men that helps carry the company into the fall. The 16-time champion showing up and ruining Theory’s moment would create an angle that fans would talk about for a long time.
