R-Truth? The Rock? Santino? Reacting to Fans' Picks for Funniest WWE Superstar

Doc-Chris MuellerJul 21, 2022

In many ways, pro wrestling is all forms of entertainment rolled into one. It has drama, romance, tragedy, action and suspense, but one thing it also has that keeps many fans coming back is comedy.

The concept of pro wrestling is kind of ridiculous to begin with, so seeing the business embrace the funny side of many of its more colorful characters has made it more enjoyable for everyone.

Some wrestlers just happen to be funny while maintaining a serious character, but there have been many performers over the years who relied solely on their ability to get laughs.

Being a comedy character in pro wrestling will rarely lead you to the top of the mountain, but it can offer you steady work and consistent booking in the right company.

We asked the B/R community to name the funniest pro wrestlers in our crowdsourcing post this week. Some names were expected, but a few unorthodox choices were also thrown out.

R-Truth

R-Truth (tyronesimmonds, dale3forever, wcblack34, dkallen and more)

Two names were mentioned more than anyone else by B/R readers, and one of those was the 54-time 24/7 champion, R-Truth.

For those who may not be aware, Truth is 50 years old and has been in the business since 1997, which means half of his life has been devoted to professional wrestling.

During those two-and-a-half decades, he has not only carved out a reputation for himself as a fantastic wrestler, but he has also showed the world just how funny he can be.

Whether he is dressing up as a confederate general to taunt John Cena or chasing whoever has the 24/7 title at any given moment, Truth is going to make you laugh at least once.

His quick wit and ability to surprise with the most random references has earned him a special place in the hearts of many fans. This man has already earned his spot in the Hall of Fame and should go in the year after he decides to retire.

Santino Marella

Santino Marella (OneMangang1976, foolin, chip72, tj_dylan and more)

Truth may have had the most mentions in our crowdsourcing post by a slight margin but Santino Marella was a close second.

The former intercontinental champion is somebody who spent his entire career on the main roster working as a comedy character, and he did well for himself in that time.

While he may not have been given the chance to have five-star matches or headline pay-per-views, Santino served a different purpose. He was the comedy relief.

It's important to have guys like the Canadian who can take a loss and not be impacted by it. He can lose 100 times in a row and the crowd will still pop when he gets a win because he was that loveable.

Marella's daughter, Bianca, is performing as Arianna Grace in NXT, so hopefully we will get to see if the comedic skills her father possesses were passed down.

Kurt Angle

Kurt Angle (TJHitsThings, Jawn_Jones, Wadero)

As soon as we put out the question of best comedy wrestlers, it was obvious there would be some Kurt Angle mentions in the comments.

The Olympian is not a comedic character, but he is a funny guy who was able to mix comedic moments into his career to make him more versatile than the average wrestler.

If you need a guy who can take Brock Lesnar to his limit at WrestleMania, you call Angle; if you need a guy to put on a tiny cowboy hat and play the guitar, you call Angle.

When you are considered one of the best athletes and technicians to lace up a pair of boots, you don't need much else to be successful. The fact that the 53-year-old could also be hilarious helped him reach that next level of fame in this business.

Also, the milk-truck segment is legendary and will live forever in fans' minds.

The Rock

4 of 6

The Rock (Richcoehrs, thepro)

One of the biggest surprises about the responses to our initial question was how few people brought up The Rock.

Dwayne Johnson is seriously funny and has been for a long time. He has a certain charm to his wit when it comes to his movies, but his comedy reaches new levels in the ring.

Rocky can eviscerate almost anyone on the mic with a few insults and catchphrases, and the crowd will always eat it up and cheer its collective head off. It's one of the many reasons why he became so successful at such a young age.

He first began to show how funny he was during backstage interviews, mostly with Lilian Garcia, but he quickly took that humor and began to incorporate it into his promos and exchanges with other wrestlers.

By the time The Great One decided to stop wrestling on a full-time basis, he had already cemented himself as one of the funniest WWE Superstars ever, and he did that in under eight years.

It's impressive to think how much he accomplished in less than a decade.

Chris Jericho

5 of 6

Chris Jericho (DLane82, LakeShow93)

Another name that did not get as much attention as expected was Chris Jericho. The former AEW champion has long been known for his ability to pop the crowd with a joke, so he seemed like a shoo-in to be one of the most mentioned names.

However, people may have a different opinion of Jericho now than they used to, at least when it comes to his comedy.

When he was with Kevin Owens in WWE, people could not get enough of him putting people on an arbitrary list and making jokes with his friend.

Even going back to the 1,004 holds list he read off on WCW Nitro in 1998, Jericho has been known as a funny guy.

The Wizard stuff he is doing now with All Elite Wrestling might not work for everyone, but his batting average is higher than most when he tries to hit a joke out of the park.

Quick Takes

6 of 6

Kevin Owens (Anfield Black)

Kevin Owens not being mentioned by more people was the biggest surprise in all of this. How does anyone not think he is the funniest guy in WWE today? This would be my personal pick for the funniest person in pro wrestling today. An all-time pick would be tougher to narrow down.

The New Day (blurshnersh)

Kofi Kingston, Xavier Woods and Big E deserve their flowers. All three guys have produced several funny moments as individuals and as a team.

'Stone Cold' Steve Austin (cdaddie, GunSafetyDwight)

Stone Cold was kind of funny at times, but he relied on the fans thinking all of his catchphrases were funny more than having a quick wit. He is actually funnier as a podcast host than he was as a wrestler.

Waylon Mercy was hilarious (Bagozzi)

We have very different definitions of the word "hilarious."

Edge and Christian as a duo (RandallFlagg19)

It's hard to disagree. Edge and Christian were amazing together, and it's impressive how both guys became more successful as serious characters later. They're versatile in that way.

Goldust is severely underrated as a comedy character (Penguindane)

While a lot of the stuff WWE had Goldust doing would be considered outdated, Dustin Rhodes was genuinely good at getting the crowd to laugh. His team with Booker T had some hilarious moments.

Shanky (gambris92)

Is this trolling?

Veer (HotPocket8481)

Copy and paste the response to Shanky.

Brock Lesnar (DollaB2)

I have to disagree with this one. Lesnar can be funny at times, but he is not really a funny character overall. Dancing with the Money in the Bank briefcase was great, though.

Pat McAfee (willywaylon)

The former NFL kicker has been one of the bright spots on WWE programming since he joined the commentary team. He deserves some flowers, for sure.
