Lesnar vs. Overeem Predictions: Victory Will Be Lesnar's Top Achievement in UFC

Patrick ClarkeDec 30, 2011

Brock Lesnar's win over Alistair Overeem in the main event at UFC 141 on Friday night in Las Vegas will be the 34-year-old's crowning achievement in the UFC.

Lesnar hasn't fought inside the Octagon since October 2010, when he surrendered his UFC heavyweight championship to Cain Velasquez.

Since then, Lesnar was forced away from the sport after his diverticulitis (digestive disease) returned for a second time.

He recovered quickly, however, and is set to make his return.

A victory over first-time UFC fighter Overeem would not only catapult Lesnar into future heavyweight title consideration, but would deliver the former champion his greatest win in seven UFC bouts.

It's a bounce-back story for Lesnar. Not once, but twice he recovered from a crippling disease that threatened to wreck not only his career, but his life.

The story could end right with a win over Overeem, a tough matchup for Lesnar.

Regardless of his technical weaknesses, however, a belt-less Lesnar means a motivated one.

Say what you want about the guy's fighting ability—even I have had my doubts since he was pummeled by Frank Mir back in February 2008, his first UFC fight—but no one can deny his unique ability and boring dominance once he gets his opponent to the ground.

Lesnar has won his last three UFC bouts in Las Vegas, his last coming back in July 2010 against undefeated Shane Carwin via submission.

His 31-year-old opponent, Alistair Overeem has yet to fight in the UFC, but has made a living thus far in his career by submitting his opponents in the early round.

That trend suggests that Friday night's bout will be settled on the ground, and if the fight makes it to the mat you can put your money, and mine, on Brock Lesnar.

He's not likable, and there's nothing about his fighting style that fans love to watch, but Lesnar is destined to recapture his mojo at UFC 141—there's no doubt about it.

Lesnar has never been in fight of this magnitude before. Sure, he's had title fights and rematches that were much-anticipated, but Friday night his career is on the line, as is his pride since falling out of the contending picture.

The Vegas cards have all fallen into place for the former University of Minnesota wrestler, and he'll deliver a thrilling victory to kick off his electrifying return to the sport within just minutes inside the cage.
