Iowa vs. Oklahoma: Landry Jones in Perfect Situation to Vault Up Draft Boards
If he wants to, Oklahoma QB Landry Jones will come out on the right end of a perfect storm. That storm will potentially make Jones millions of dollars.
Jones has not had a spectacular season at Oklahoma. In my own personal mock drafts, he's fallen from the top five, to outside of the top 20. Even though he hasn't thrown a pass since December 3, his draft status has gone back up to inside of the top 10.
This was the first part of the perfect storm.
The second part will come on Friday night. While it's certainly not the bowl that they had in mind at the beginning of the season, Oklahoma could not have found itself in a more favorable game. Iowa allows more than 23 points a game, and even those numbers have been aided by a few good performances against weaker teams.
If we're looking at common opponents, Iowa State put up 44 points on the Hawkeyes. The Sooners had no problem with the Hawkeyes later in the year.
So, if Jones enters the draft, this will be the last game that NFL scouts get to see him play in. That's going to be a great final memory.
Behind Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III (if he enters the draft), Jones is easily the third best quarterback in the draft. When you look at the needs of the teams that will be picking in the top 10, he's not going to fall far.
If anything, this performance will bump Jones up a few spots, although he won't vault Luck or Griffin. Iowa does not have the kind of defense that will give Jones any real trouble. He'll put up massive numbers in this game.
The combination of now being the third best quarterback in the draft and leaving a final stamp on his college football career will only do good things for Jones. He'll move up in the draft, which will bring him more money.
It's a perfect storm indeed.
