Jets Rumors: GM Joe Douglas 'More Willing Than Ever to Make a Bold Trade'

Adam WellsMar 8, 2022

Heading into his fourth season as New York Jets general manager, Joe Douglas is reportedly ready to be aggressive in trying to upgrade his roster this offseason.

Per ESPN's Rich Cimini, Douglas "appears more willing than ever to make a bold trade" if he can find the right deal.

During his end-of-season press conference on Jan. 10, Douglas expressed a willingness to be "aggressive in a lot of different avenues" this offseason.

The Jets put Douglas in a difficult situation when they brought him on board in June 2019, two months after Mike Maccagnan was surprisingly fired.

Per Cimini, Maccagnan and head coach Adam Gase had "friction" due to "disagreements over personnel during free agency."

Gase was hired by Maccagnan in January 2019, leaving Douglas with a head coach that he didn't interview when he came to New York.

After a 9-23 record in two seasons, Gase was fired. Douglas brought in Robert Saleh, who spent the previous four years as San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator, as the Jets' new head coach in January 2021.

New York's hopes for last season were tied to Zach Wilson, who was selected with the No. 2 pick in the draft. He struggled with adjusting to the league, throwing for 2,334 yards, nine touchdowns, 11 interceptions and completing just 55.6 percent of his attempts.

The Jets do have a lot of assets to make a big trade this offseason. They have four of the first 38 picks in the draft, including two in the top 10 (Nos. 4 and 10).

New York finished last in the AFC East with a 4-13 record in 2021. The team hasn't finished higher than third in the division since 2015 and hasn't made the playoffs since 2010.
