Chael Sonnen and 8 Fighters with Barks Bigger Than Their Bites

Jeffrey McKinneyDec 29, 2011

It's hard to imagine a major MMA fight without some level of trash talk.

Many guys talk trash, but some only do it to hype up their fights.

Although some of the guys on this list are complete jerks, they are capable of showing humility or acting the opposite of how they may look.

Here's a look at some of the guys whose barks are a lot bigger than their bites.

Nick and Nate Diaz

1 of 7

If you judge the Diaz brothers by their public image alone, you'll think they're the two biggest thugs to ever hit the Octagon.

Nick and Nate not only try to act like they don't care about their actions, they antagonize their opponents inside and out of the ring.

But while they may seem like thugs sometimes, there are other times when they seem soft-spoken, shy or play the victim role.

They may try to act hard, but I don't know too many thugs who are Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts and run triathlons.

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson is one of the best trash talkers in the UFC today.

The Memphis born fighter is known for his signature mean mug, wearing a huge chain around his neck and howling as he enters the Octagon.

Although Jackson talks a mean game to go along with his look, he's really just a funny guy who knows how to sell fights.

Jackson may talk about how he's going to knock someone out, but he hasn't won a fight by knockout since 2008.

Tito Ortiz

Tito Ortiz may be in the fans' good graces today, but there was once a time when many people hated him.

Ortiz was once known for being one of the greatest champions in MMA history. He was also know for his big trash talk and heated exchanges with Ken Shamrock and Chuck Liddell.

Ortiz even continued the trash talk well after his career started to decline.

Now nearing the end of his career, Ortiz has only won once since 2006 and has become a more humble fighter.

Jason "Mayhem" Miller

4 of 7

Jason "Mayhem" Miller is one of the most unique personalities in MMA.

He's been seen on shows like Bully Beatdown and The Ultimate Fighter, and he's had some memorable moments like calling out Nick Diaz and starting a brawl when he challenged Jake Shields.

But while Miller is a good talker, he recently proved that having a bad gas tank and subpar striking won't get you very far in the UFC.

Miller and opposing TUF coach Michael Bisping talked trash for weeks on the show.

After Miller said he was going to knock out Bisping, Miller found himself on the opposing end of a TKO loss.

Michael Bisping

Michael Bisping is one of the most hated fighters in MMA today.

The Brit has antagonized everyone from Dan Henderson to Chael Sonnen

Although Bisping is a good fighter, he would have you believe he's one of MMA's elite fighters.

Bisping is currently on a good run. But he has yet to defeat a champion-level fighter.

Bisping himself even admitted he was not ready for a championship fight after he defeated Jason Miller earlier in the month.

Brock Lesnar

6 of 7

Brock Lesnar will make his long awaited return tonight at UFC 141.

Lesnar is a former UFC champion who brought some of his WWE antics with him when he made the transition to MMA.

Although some of Lesnar's trash talk can be downright offensive, he's really a quiet family man who likes to hunt and stays out of the public eye.

Lesnar may look intimidating, but his last couple of fights have proved that size does not always matter.

Chael Sonnen

7 of 7

Chael Sonnen may be the biggest trash talker in MMA history.

Despite tapping to Anderson Silva, Sonnen believes he's the real middleweight champion because he controlled Silva for much of their fight.

Sonnen has also called out a who's who of MMA fighters including Jon Jones, Michael Bisping and most of Brazil's top fighters.

Although Sonnen makes a bunch of off-the-wall claims and threats, it's all for show.

Sonnen has proved many times that he's capable of being respectful and is even a pretty good analyst.

Give Sonnen an open mic, and he could say anything. But put him in a tame setting like ESPN's MMALive, and Sonnen may prove to you that he's not all that crazy.
