UFC 141 Fight Card: Brock Lesnar and Other Final Main-Card Predictions
It's not Saturday. It's tonight! Don't forget!
Because the fan who misses UFC 141, featuring massive heavyweights Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar, tonight from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas is going to be one unhappy camper.
Everyone always seems to say that the next pay-per-view on the calendar is the MMA event of the year. But this time it's true. This is the MMA event of the year!
Well, maybe not. UFC Rio comes to mind immediately as a better event. But it doesn't matter. It's still pretty big.
Here are some final predictions for every fight on the main card.
5. Nam Phan vs. Jimy Hettes
1 of 5Featherweight bout
Hettes has not only never lost, he has never gone the distance. Every single one of his fights (nine altogether) has ended with a submission.
That's crazy.
Phan is being painted as the more experienced fighter. That's true enough, but he only has three fights in the Octagon himself, so it's not like he's Jeremy Horn out there.
Phan has the jiu-jitsu chops to hang with Hettes, but in my mind, Hettes should be favored to win by submission until such time as something else happens.
Prediction: Hettes, submission, Round 2. Submission of the Night right here.
4. Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Alexander Gustafsson
2 of 5Light heavyweight bout
Simply put, it's winter vs. spring when 40-year-old Matyushenko tangles with 24-year-old Gustafsson. This would be a huge win for either man and would mean a big step up in competition.
Gustafsson will surely try to use his superior boxing skill, as well as all the athleticism his young frame can put behind it. Matyushenko, true to his grizzled veteran ways, will likely want a grind war.
Youth will carry the day in his one.
Prediction: Gustafsson, TKO, Round 2
3. Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks
3 of 5Welterweight bout
No "Smoke Break" jokes, thank you very much.
Fitch has been talking a lot about how he has been overlooked in the welterweight title conversation (true) and how he will be looking to finish a fight (we'll see).
Either way, take nothing away from Hendricks, but he's overmatched in this one.
Prediction: Fitch by unanimous decision
2. Nate Diaz vs. Donald Cerrone
4 of 5Lightweight bout
Cerrone is close to his coveted title shot, but he has faltered in big spots before. Diaz seems to love the attention, and he has the well-rounded style to take the fight to Cerrone no matter where it goes. Sound the upset alarms.
Prediction: Diaz by TKO, Round 2
1. Brock Lesnar vs. Alistair Overeem
5 of 5Heavyweight bout
It's a rude welcome to the UFC for Overeem. Lesnar looks lean and mean and lives for the bright lights. He also should be able to land takedowns at will. This one is Lesnar's to lose.
Prediction: Lesnar, TKO, Round 2
