Why OKC Thunder Need to Be Concerned About Durant, Westbrook Fight
While the Oklahoma City Thunder keep rolling in the win column, not everything is perfect in the OKC locker room.
Star players Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant got into an altercation during last night's 98-95 win over the Memphis Grizzlies.
In the aftermath, the Thunder need to be concerned about the situation, but there is no need to panic over it.
Let's face it, superstars are going to disagree during the heat of battle. No one gets along 100 percent of the time.
The concerning part is Westbrook's performance following the altercation.
He came through with the worst performance of his career, scoring just four points on 0-for-13 shooting with six assists, three rebounds and four turnovers. Also, his decision making was lousy at times.
When Durant was really going in the fourth quarter, Westbrook came off a couple pick-and-rolls and threw up a couple of bricks from 18 feet instead of feeding the guy that was on fire.
Normally that wouldn't be an issue, but in a close game with one guy struggling, feeding the hot hand always makes more sense. Especially when that hot hand has won a pair of scoring titles.
The Thunder need to be a little concerned of Westbrook's real ability to lead this offense.
Let's face it, this is and always will be Durant's team.
While Westbrook is a superstar, the quicker he realizes that, the better off he will be in the long run.
Expectations can sometimes make a team crack and while that's not the case yet with the Thunder, there are major expectations for this team.
While a sideline argument between the two isn't going to destroy the team, it's something that needs to be kept an eye on. They need to squash it before it becomes an issue.
Having a veteran like Kendrick Perkins also helps. Sometimes younger teams don't know how to put out the internal fires quick enough. With a veteran leader like Perkins aboard, the fire can be put out before it escalates.
But there is no need to panic and make a major issue out of it. There is no need to trade Westbrook to make the situation better.
If there is anything to be majorly concerned with though, it could be Westbrook's play and not the sideline altercation.
