Flyers Rangers 24/7: Why HBO Should Follow Teams for the Entire Season

T.J. McaloonDec 28, 2011

The HBO documentary series 24/7 takes viewers on an in-depth look at what it is like playing in the NHL.

However, we are only treated to four episodes, which means there is a lot of stuff that is left on the cutting room floor. It’s why 24/7 should follow a team for a full season, not just over a two-month span.

Through two episodes on 24/7 we have seen the ups and downs of the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers' seasons.

The Flyers have had a rash of injuries plague their team, and was forced to deal with a losing streak after winning seven straight games.

If HBO would follow the Flyers from the start of the season, we could have seen what it was like for Flyers free agents Jaromir Jagr, Max Talbot, Wayne Simmonds and Ilya Bryzgalov when they first came to Philadelphia.

Plus, if we had a full year of 24/7, we would get to see more great moments of one-on-one time with Bryzgalov. Maybe he would be able to tell us more about the universe, and why you should not kill a tiger in Russia.

For the Rangers, if we would have a full season with the team, we could see if their game plan of limiting goalie Henrik Lundqvist's minutes will pay off during the playoffs.

If the HBO cameras would have followed the Rangers from the beginning of the season, we could have seen the original meeting between Rangers forward Sean Avery and management when they sent Avery down to the American Hockey League.

Then we could have watched as Avery was brought back up to the NHL and how he inserted himself back onto the team.

Not to mention, we could have seen Lundqvist play in his benefit concert that we saw him prepare for with tennis legend John McEnroe.

And who wouldn’t want to see more between-period rants from Rangers head coach John Tortorella? We could have watched Tortorella deal with the New York media if this team starts to struggle in the final months of this season.

Instead, we are left with a lot to be desired when the season wraps after the Winter Classic on January 2nd. We will not get to watch these teams during their playoff runs, nor when they head to the offseason.

Maybe sometime soon we will get a full season of 24/7. Until then, it’s just a dream for all of us diehard hockey fans.
