Notable Results

The most stunning result of the tournament thus far has been the Florida Gators' demise.

Coming into the tournament as the No. 15 overall seed and hosting a regional, the Gators dropped their opener 5-3 to South Florida on Friday.

Needing a win today to stay alive, Florida was blown out of the water by South Alabama. Holding a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Jaguars broke things wide open with 10 runs.

South Alabama had 10 consecutive hits with two outs in the inning, but only one went for extra bases (Hunter Donaldson's double).

The top seven hitters in the Jaguars lineup who started the game all had at least two hits. Five different players had at least two RBI, led by Santi Montiel with five.

Florida pitchers Franco Aleman and Brandon Sproat saw their ERAs spike in the loss. They combined to allow 16 runs (14 earned) on 14 hits in 28 batters faced over 3.1 innings.

Florida was the only one of the 16 regional hosts that lost Friday and became the first one to be eliminated.

The Gators didn't suffer the worst loss of the day. That honor was split between two teams, starting with Southeast Missouri State in a 21-0 shellacking at the hands of Southern Mississippi.

The Golden Eagles scored at least four runs in four different innings. Reed Trimble and Christopher Sargent each drove in five runs. Sargent hit three of the team's six homers.

The other team was Connecticut in a 26-3 defeat against Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish tagged Huskies starter Ben Casparius for 11 runs in 3.2 innings.

UConn reliever Brendan O'Donnell closed out the game by giving up nine runs on 10 hits over the final 3.1 innings.

Notre Dame first baseman Niko Kavadas went 3-for-4 with two homers, eight RBI and five runs scored.

Duke's RJ Schreck also had three homers Saturday. The junior led the Blue Devils to a 14-6 win over Wright State that kept their season alive. He also saved a grand slam with a web gem in the bottom of the sixth inning:

The best game of the day saw LSU get a walk-off 6-5 win over Central Connecticut. After Tre' Morgan struck out to start the bottom of the 10th, Gavin Dugas reached when he was hit by a pitch from Central Connecticut reliever Jake Neuman.

Zach Arnold singled, and Drew Bianco walked to load the bases. Giovanni DiGiacomo ended the game with a single back up the middle.

Pitching was at a premium at several regional sites Saturday. Norfolk State didn't get much of it in a 16-0 loss to Maryland.

Seven games in the early afternoon slate featured at least one team that scored at least 10 runs.
