NBA Free Agents: Tyson Chandler Should Beg To Stay with Dallas Mavericks

Kyle VassaloNov 29, 2011

Tyson Chandler is going to have a number of different options this season, but the highly-touted big man would be setting himself up for failure if he didn't stay put in Dallas.

The season before Chandler dominated with the Mavs during their championship run, he was stinking it up with the Bobcats, bringing in 6.2 RPG and only scoring 6.5 PPG.

So what changed? Why are we suddenly looking at Chandler like we did when he first arrived in New Orleans back in 2006?

It's really no secret. Chandler shared the frontcourt with Dirk Nowitzki and reaped the benefits of playing alongside one of the best players in the NBA.

That isn't to say Chandler wasn't the perfect complement to Nowtizki. The 7'1" center provided tremendous size down low and was instrumental in bringing Dallas a championship.

That being said, Chandler has been highly inconsistent throughout his career. Despite being under 30, he's played 10 seasons in the NBA. His up-and-down body of work should scare teams away from investing heavily in his services.

Most of all, it should scare Chandler away from ever leaving.

Dallas has a good thing going. They have an owner who is willing to spend to win, they're the defending champs and Dirk is going to be at the forefront of the MVP race from the very start of the season.

Having the chance to be someone's No. 1 has to be enticing to Chandler, but why risk going through another dip in production?

Chandler should be doing everything he can to stay in Dallas, even if a lesser team is willing to shell out a little more money.
