How about this for a tall task?

Wayne Gretzky was the single greatest hockey player of all time. His list of accomplishments is jaw dropping. Most impressive, perhaps, is the 894 goals the Great One piled up during his 20 NHL seasons, which ranks first all time.

Gretzky had a knack for big goals in big moments and bringing the crowd to its feet with some of the goals he would score. So, narrowing his nearly 900 goals down to a top-10 list is a challenge. No doubt there will be some great goals that were left off of this list. Feel free to comment away with links to other great Gretzky goals.

Thanks for reading, and enjoy.

Passing Espo

Seventy-seven goals in a single season is a huge number, but it was no match for Wayne Gretzky, who shattered Phil Esposito's single-season goal record. This goal, which passed Espo, was just the beginning.

Baseball

Perhaps Wayne Gretzky could have had a career in baseball. Despite getting stuffed on his first shot attempt, Gretzky was able to bat the puck out of mid air from the face-off dot right past the goaltender.

Clutch

Wayne Gretzky was always coming up huge in clutch moments. Here, the Calgary Flames fell victim to the Great One.

The Great One Alone

Is there a worse nightmare for a goaltender than to see Wayne Gretzky charging down the ice on a breakaway? I think not.

The Great Point Steak

Fifty-one straight games with a point is unheard of in today's day and age. Gretzky made it look incredibly easy—like everything else he did.

First Time for Everything

Even Wayne Gretzky needed to score his first goal at some point. Leave it to the Great One to do so in style.

Hat Trick

Everything Wayne Gretzky touches turns to pure gold. Even when he was playing with the Los Angeles Kings, a less than stellar franchise, he turned in heart-stopping moments in the postseason.

Broad Street Bullies Who?

Considering the fact that Wayne Gretzky was a finesse player, and that the Philadelphia Flyers of the 70s and 80s were one of the meanest teams of all time, it is impressive that Gretzky managed to make them all mist continuously throughout his career. The Great One made fools out of everyone.

50 in 39

This is not a single goal, but Wayne Gretzky's accomplishment of netting 50 goals in 39 games is one that is not likely to be matched by anyone for the rest of time.

Lighting the Lamp at WJC

In terms of whether Wayne Gretzky was going to be an NHL superstar, it is safe to say that the writing was on the wall. During the World Junior Classic, Wayne Gretzky absolutely dominated the competition with 17 points in the tournament.
