Earlier this season, Detroit Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard signed a two-year deal to keep him in Detroit.

The question on the minds of Wings fans is: "who will the Wings would sign to be his back-up?"

Earlier today, Chris Osgood, former back-up goaltender and mentor of Howard, removed himself from contention of the title of Detroit's back-up goaltender as he officially retired from the NHL, hanging up the skates after 16 seasons.

Osgood, one of the all time great goaltenders was also suspect to porous goaltending at times, letting in bad goals randomly such as this one.

But Osgood also has a fairly impressive resume, the numbers speak for themselves, including becoming the tenth goaltender to reach 400 wins

He is also one of only nine NHL goalies to score a goal in an NHL game.

One can talk about Osgood's involvement in the Avalanche-Red Wings rivalry in the 1990s, but ultimately Wings fans come back to the question of who will back up Jimmy Howard this season.

This article will go through some of the goalies that Red Wings GM Ken Holland has to replace Osgood as a back-up goaltender next season.
