NHL Trade News: 7 Teams Still Eyeing a Deal for Jarome Iginla
Jarome Iginla has spent his entire NHL career with the Calgary Flames, and even at age 34, he is still one of the top players in the game.
Last season Iginla amassed 86 points on 43 goals and 43 assists, it was a 14 point improvement over his 2009-10 stats.
Iginla has never won a Stanley Cup championship, although they Flames came close in 2004 when they lost in seven games to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Finals.
His name has come up in many trade rumors over the past few seasons as the Flames have been unable to compete for a Cup title.
As his career winds down, there are several teams who should look to acquire Iginla, and give him an opportunity to win his first championship.
Let's look at seven teams who are still trying to acquire Iginla and improve their roster for the 2011-12 season.
Toronto Maple Leafs
1 of 7The Toronto Maple Leafs need offense badly. Phil Kessel is their only true scoring threat, and their passionate and loyal fan base has been waiting since 2004 to make the playoffs.
Iginla would instantly improve the Maple Leafs offense with his scoring and passing abilities.
But his experience would be another asset Iginla would bring to the Leafs, as they are a young squad with little playoff experience.
St. Louis Blues
2 of 7The St. Louis Blues are a good young team who are a couple pieces away from being a perennial playoff team.
Adding Jarome Iginla would help their offense a ton, as the Blues do not have a lot of firepower upfront.
Iginla's experience would also help the young Blues squad which has many good young offensive and defensive players.
The Blues also don't have a lot of star power, and acquiring Iginla may help from a revenue standpoint by increasing ticket and jersey sales.
Dallas Stars
3 of 7The Dallas Stars badly need a player like Jarome Iginla since their top offensive threat, Brad Richards, just signed a free agent contract with the New York Rangers.
The Stars have enough cap space to absorb Iginla's contract and are thin at the wing positions, especially on the right side.
A few draft picks and some young talent could be enough to persuade Calgary to trade Iginla to Dallas, a team that desperately needs a face of the franchise.
Buffalo Sabres
4 of 7For the past few seasons, the Buffalo Sabres have been an under achieving team who does well in the regular season but falls hard when the playoffs arrive.
After losing in the first round again in 2011, the Sabres could use some more firepower and not rely on goalie Ryan Miller too much.
Jarome Iginla would give the Sabres a physical forward who is a pure scorer, something Buffalo doesn't have.
The Sabres are a contender now and will be in the future, and would give Iginla a good chance to win his first ever Stanley Cup title.
San Jose Sharks
5 of 7The San Jose Sharks have not reached the Stanley Cup Finals in their team's history despite having some specatucalr regular seasons in the past decade.
The Sharks have gotten closer to the Finals over the past few seasons, losing in the Western Conference Finals the past two seasons.
Acquirign Iginla would mean giving some top talent up, but San Jose hasn't won with who they have.
Trading Patrick Marleau or Joe Thornton in a package for Iginla would make sense for both teams.
The Sharks need a consistent scorer who doesn't disappear in big games, and Iginla is that player.
He's also hungry for a Stanley Cup, and this determination would fit in well with the Sharks who have a roster of many players looking to win their first Stanley Cup title.
Philadelphia Flyers
6 of 7The Philadelphia Flyers have made multiple trades this offseason that have completely changed their roster, including trading their captain Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings.
The Flyers could make another move for Iginla to really put themselves in a good position to win the Stanley Cup.
Iginla is one of the best two-way forwards in the game, which is the type of player Philly needs.
His scoring and passing would also help the Flyers tremendously and he would add some valuable experience to a team that is for the most part a young one.
The Flyers are one of the tougher teams in the NHL, and Iginla is not afraid to get dirty and physical at any time.
Montreal Canadiens
7 of 7The Montreal Canadiens have many quality offensive players but they don't have a pure scorer like Jarome Iginla, who is also a fabulous two-way player.
Iginla would be a great Canadian-born star to help bring Stanley Cup glory back to Montreal. The Canadiens have tried to acquire the Tampa Bay Lightning French Canadian star Vincent Lecavalier but have failed each time.
Iginla would make the Canadiens a top Cup contender and would give them the offensive firepower they need to win in the playoffs.
