The Starcaps Scandal

Such a happy sounding product name. But it bodes no joy for a number of NFL players, including several IDP studs.

So far the scandal has caught up to Atlanta DT Grady Jackson, Minnesota’s inside DT tandem of Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, as well as the Saints’ bookends Will Smith and Charles Grant.

There may or may not be more names added to this list.

Despite the intrigue shrouding these players’ appeals process, the outcome is almost certain.  All these players will be suspended, most likely four games, and probably sooner than the currently rumored mid-November. League policy has always been no excuses; you are responsible for what goes into and comes out of your body, period, the end.

They do, however, have most excellent grounds for a lawsuit. Saints’ OG Jamar Nesbit didn’t even bother with an appeal and is already in court.

But what you really want to know is what to do if you have one of these players?

In a seasonal format, I would drop all of these players immediately. In dynasty or keeper leagues, it depends.

Will Smith and Charles Grant in New Orleans are probably both worth hanging onto. Grant, however, still has that involuntary manslaughter charge hanging over his head, potentially leading him to a deep, dark place in the Commish’s doghouse.

When I heard the news Kevin Williams was named, I ran to the waiver wire before it closed and cashed him in for Gaines Adams.  Which just goes to show you there are always some real gems on fantasy IDP waiver wires.  It was a panic decision but I don’t regret it in the slightest.  After suffering through Kevin Curtis all last season, I am leery of any player who puts up most of his points in a small number of games...
