Sports Legacies: The Next Cities to Win 4 Titles in 7 Years

With the Boston Bruins winning the Stanley Cup this year one needs to recognize the amazing feat of one single city winning the title in the four major sports in one season.  Could it be done again?  Wel here are some cities and franchises that I beleive could possibly accomplish this feat.

5. Miami

So the Miami Heat didn't win it this year?  As a Boston fan, I can assure you that titles will come to South Beach.  I remember watching spring training back in 2003, I saw the Mets, Cardinals and Marlins play over the course of a couple games.  

I was least impressed with the Marlins, who in retrospect had Burnett, Becket, Penny and Dontrelle Willis on the same pitching staff. Needless to say, they won the series that year, and with rising stars like Josh Johnson (now on the DL) and Mike Stanton, they could surprise us at any time like they did in '97 and '03.  

Watch out for the Panthers as they have a lot of cap room and they are notoriously good at the draft.  Who's to say that they can't recreate their magical run from 1996? The Dolphins are a question mark, but with a solid corner piece like Jake Long on the team, there is always hope.  By the way, guess who's the only team besides the Patriots to win an AFC East championship since 2003?

4. Chi-Town

A.k.a., Chicago.  Okay, the Cubbies won World Series over a Florida team in Back to the Future in 1997, but that doesn't count.  Well, we have one notch in the 'W' column already for the Blackhawks.  The Bulls are not that far behind. I can see Derrick Rose hoisting an NBA MVP trophy above his head within the next couple of years.  The Bears it seems, no matter how bad things are at the QB position are always in the hunt come playoff time.  That leaves the White Sox.  Can they recreate that magical run from 2005?  With Ozzie at the helm, anythings possible. 

3. New York, New York

It's the city that never sleeps, and the city with the best chance as far as possible teams go, to go four for four.  Regardless of how well the Jets do this season, the Big Apple already has one Lombardi Trophy (courtesy of the Giants) and one World Series Trophy (courtesy of the Yanks).  

Though not much is expected from the Isles, who will someday regain their 80's form, the Rangers are always in contention as far as winning the cup.  By my math with two New York teams, that is a 1 in 15 chance of winning the Cup.  God only knows what kind of three-headed mythical creature the Knicks might create, but if we ever see a Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Dwight Howard combination, then one must think that they would be destined for an NBA title. 

2. Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love.

Baseball and Football wise you couldn't ask for much better free agent signings.  With Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee, as well as the recent addition of Hunter Pence to the lineup,  the Phillies are a definite contender to be World Series Champs.

During the past couple of weeks, the same could be said of the Eagles with a strong team returning from last year led by Michael Vick. DeSean Jackson and LeSean McCoy.  The additions of Nick Barnett and Nnamdi Asumgha only strengthen this firm nucleus and make them extremely viable Super Bowl contenders.

The Flyers are perennial contenders only a year removed from the Stanley Cup Finals.  The only question mark in this group is the 76er's.  Can Evan Turner be a difference maker for the team?  It'll be interesting with to see with the impending lockout in the NBA if this team can turn itself into a contender much like their Eagle brethren have done so to start the season this year.

1. Beantown

Yes, Boston once again.  The impending NBA lockout plays into this a little because I think that the Celtics best chance for a title would be with a 40 or so game season.  That being said, it's hard to believe that the longest drought in the region is the Patriots, who have not won the Lombardi since 2005. With Brady at the helm and Belichick's propensity for drafting made fro the NFL ready talent, they are always a contender.  

With a plethora of rookies such as Seguin, McQuaid and Marchand, it is not out of the realm of possibility for the Bruins to repeat next year.  As for the Red Sox, the term destiny has been used with this year's team.  With Adrian Gonzalez, David Ortiz , Carl Crawford and a solid pitching staff, the sky is the limit for this team, and for this city to further their accomplishments.
