NHL Draft 2011 Grades: Winners and Losers from Day 1

Tom Urtz Jr.Jun 24, 2011

Day One of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft has come and gone and 30 excellent prospects are now members of the NHL family.

Each player was picked for a reason and they will fit in on their new club either now in the immediate future.

This slideshow will break down the winners and losers from day one, and it will grade the pick overall.

Edmonton Oilers- Ryan Nugent Hopkins- Winner

1 of 34

1st Overall Pick- Ryan Nugent Hopkins

This pick has be anticipated and expected since the draft lottery results were in. Ryan Nugent Hopkins is a quality pick and real winner for the Edmonton Oilers.

Nugent-Hopkins is an explosive center with great bursts of speed and excellent playmaking abilities. His spectacular on-ice vision just improves his overall game. He seems to have an easy time finding teammates on the ice and feeding them with clean crisp passes.

Looking down the road, the combination of Ryan Nugent Hopkins, Taylor Hall, and Jordan Eberle all on one line is going to be a force to be reckoned with. Hall, last year’s number one pick, had an good rookie season with 22 goals and 20 assists in a season limited by injury.

The last time the Oilers had three young players of this caliber, Jari Kurri, Mark Messier, and Wayne Gretzky were in town.

While it is too early to tell, what is clear is the the Edmonton Oilers have cemented their future in drafting Ryan Nugent Hopkins.

Grade- A

Colorado Avalance- Gabriel Landeskog- Winner

2 of 34

2nd Overall Pick- Gabriel Landeskog

Gabriel Landeskog is the one of the most NHL-ready players in this year's draft class. He has a lot of skills and an impressive two-way game.

Landeskog is going to fit right in with Matt Duchene on Colorado Avalache. This pick made a helluva lot of sense as Landeskog is going to fill the void that Chris Stewart left when he was traded for Erik Johnson.

It seems like a match made in heaven as Landeskog's idle growing up was the Avalanche's legend Peter Forsberg

Landeskog is a decent goal scorer who has some grit to his game. He works hard along the boards and fights for puck possession. He has been compared to his fellow countryman Daniel Alfredsson.

Landeskog has a bright future because he does what it takes to score. He doesn't rely on pure talent but relies on his superior work ethic.

Grade- A+

Florida Panthers- Jonathan Huberdeau- Winner

3 of 34

3rd Overall Pick Jonathan Huberdeau- Winner

Jonathan Huberdeau really skyrocked up the draft board this year. His 105 points season had a lot to do with it.

Huberdeau has a lot of the tools required to be a top center in the NHL and he is also a serviceable winger. He will fit well with the Florida Panthers as he brings an offensive arsenal that could really turn the Panthers around

Huberdeau is a force to be reckoned with on the ice. He is gifted with a great skill set which are complemented with his agile hands and his size. He has a great natural composure that makes him NHL ready. His killer instincts only enhance his lethal shot and hands.

Huberdeau is also a very clutch and skilled player, and this was his season during the playoffs as he racked up 30 points in only 19 games. The Florida Panthers are on the rise as they unveiled their new jersey which shows a Panther out for blood and ready to attack.Jonathan Huberdeau is certainly a superstar in the making.

Grade- A

TOP NEWS

NHL Mock Draft

New Jersey Devils- Adam Larsson- Winner

4 of 34

4th Overall Pick- Adam Larsson

The last time the New Jersey Devils has a pick this early in the draft, they selected Scott Niedermayer at 3rd overall.

Adam Larsson is one of the biggest steals in this year's draft.

Larsson is a great puck handling defenseman with a superb on-ice vision. Larsson is very calm and collected under pressure.

He was the top defensive prospect in this draft and was drafted accordingly.

Larsson is a great skater who can turn on the jets to play defense but can also join the offensive rush.

Larsson is going to be a great addition to the New Jersey Devils for many years to come.

Grade- A

New York Islanders- Ryan Strome- Loser

5 of 34

5th Overall Pick Ryan Strome

Ryan Strome is a talented top player in this year's draft. What sets him apart from others in this draft is his work ethic. What Ryan Strome may lack in size and stature, he compensates with his talent and speed.

Ryan Strome will make an impact on the New York Islanders. The Islanders already have a talented player in John Tavares so it is going to be exciting to watch the two play together.

Strome is a player that will become a future 30-40 goal scorer if paired with a player like Tavares

Strome finished the 2010-11 OHL season with 33 goals and 73 assists for 106 points overall.

This pick makes sense if him and Tavares click, but the Islanders really should have drafted an offensive defenseman like Dougie Hamilton.

Grade- C+

Ottawa Senators- Mika Zibanejad- Winner

6 of 34

6th Overall- Mika Zibanejad

Mika Zibanejad has really climbed the draft board in many mock drafts over the course of the past few months.

Mika Zibanejad is a strong, competitive center from Sweden and has the potential to become a good power forward because of his soft hands and his great scoring touch.

He also is a great skater with good on-ice vision, and he isn't afraid to get physical when it is deemed necessary.

Zibanejad is going to fit in with the Ottawa Senators as he is an aggressive puck handler and he will fit in with other players like Jason Spezza.

Zibanejad is a real steal and could make an NHL impact real soon.

Grade- B+

Winnipeg Jets- Mark Scheifele- Loser

7 of 34

7th Overall Pick- Mark Scheifele

Mark Scheifele is one of the players in this draft that might hit the NHL right after the draft if he has a solid training camp.

He is a very surprising pick at 7th overall.

Scheifele is a playmaker with skilled and agile hands. His speed and legs are essential to his game. Scheifele is a smart two-way forward who has the makings of becoming a dominant power forward in the NHL.

He is on the small size for his position, but there is hope. If Scheifele can bulk up and hit the 185-190 lbs. range, he will be viewed in a completely different light.

Mark Scheifele is a solid player but is one who was expected to go in the mid to late first round.

This pick is a loss because the Winnipeg Jets passed over quality players like Sean Couturier, Dougie Hamilton, and Ryan Murphy

Grade- C+

Philadelphia Flyers- Sean Couturier- Winner

8 of 34

8th Overall Pick- Sean Couturier

This pick is a huge steal for the Philadelphia Flyers. After trading away Jeff Carter and Mike Richards, the Flyers just added some major depth.

Sean Couturier is a solid offensive player. He has good hands and speed. He has a good offensive touch as he posted back-to-back, 96-point seasons in the QMJHL.

Couturier is one of the players that was predicted to slide up and down the draft board.

What is clear is that the Flyers are blessed that Couturier just fell into their laps. Couturier brings a lot to the table and could really make the squad out of training camp.

Grade- A-

Boston Bruins- Dougie Hamilton- Huge Winner

9 of 34

9th Overall Pick- Dougie Hamilton

Dougie Hamilton is a sizable two-way defender who has a booming shot and good hands. That sound like another defenseman on the Bruins, doesn't it?

Adding him to the Boston Bruins makes them an impressive defensive team.He joins a team already stacked with players like Zdeno Chara.

Hamilton excels in both facets of his game and is NHL-ready. Hamilton is a 6'4" almost 200-pound physical defender whose hands make him able enough to run a power play.

Hamilton is a good replacement for Tomas Kaberle who could leave via free agency.

In the trade for Phil Kessel, the Bruins received Toronto's 1st round pick(2nd overall 2010), their second round pick(32nd overall 2010), and as the first round pick(9th overall) this year. With those picks they selected Seguin, Knight and now Hamilton.

What a good trade for just Phil Kessel.

This is a major steal as many mock drafts predicted Hamilton to be selected as early as 4th overall.

Grade- A+

Minnesota Wild- Jonas Brodin- Loser

10 of 34

10th Overall Pick- Jonas Brodin

Jonas Brodin is another defender in this year's draft which is full of defensive prospects.

He stands 6'1" and is a meager 165 lbs. To be a successful defender, he is going to have to bulk up and put on some muscle weight.

The Minnesota Wild had three other defensive options in Nathan Bealieau, Duncan Siemens, and Ryan Murphy.

Brodin is only 17 years old so he will play in the minor leagues to gain some more experience. He is a solid and reliable pick that could flourish into a great player but could also be used as an asset.

Brodin could develop into a stalwart player but at this point, this pick is a loss.

Grade- C+

Colorado Avalanche- Duncan Siemens- Winner

11 of 34

11th Overall Pick- Duncan Siemens

Duncan Siemens is a solid defender who will occasional join the offensive rush.

His booming shot makes him a threat when playing the point on the power play. Siemens also isn't afraid to get physical as his 121 penalty minutes are a testament of that.

He is a good fit for the Colorado Avalanche after losing Adam Foote to retirement and J.M. Liles in a trade with Toronto.

Duncan Siemens will be tearing up the ice on an NHL blueline before you know it. He makes sense as opposed to other defenseman that were still on the table. Siemens is a gritty defenseman that fits in with the style of the Colorado Avalanche.

Grade- B+

Carolina Hurricanes-Ryan Murphy-Winner

12 of 34

12th Overall Pick- Ryan Murphy

Ryan Murphy had been scouted as a top five pick because of his abilites. However, his size pushed him back significantly. One scout even said if Ryan Murphy was 6'1", he would be the No. 1 pick overall.

The Carolina Hurricanes getting Murphy at 12th overall is a major steal.

Murphy has a lot of tools that make him a great two-way defenseman. Murphy has the potential to be a sleeper pick in this draft. His pinpoint-passing accuracy makes him a dual threat on both sides of the ice. Watch out and don't blink because you just might miss Ryan Murphy.

Grade- A-

Calgary Flames- Sven Bartschi- Winner

13 of 34

13th Overall Pick Sven Bartschi

Bartschi contributed 85 points in only 66 games for the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL. Bartschi has been heavily scouted by many teams and a lot by the Hurricanes in particular.

"

“Bartschi is a creator...He’s highly-skilled, smart and competes hard.” -said Tony MacDonald, the Canes’ chief amateur scout.

"

Bartschi has good hands and on-ice vision and is a speedy winger standing at 5'11" and 185 lbs. Bartschi will flourish in the NHL if he is paired with a good center.

He is a good pick for the Calgary Flames as they are looking to improve offensively and Bartschi is a good player to invest in.

Over time he will flourish into a solid NHL winger and will light the lamp for the Flames in years to come

Grade- B

Dallas Stars- Jamieson Oleksaik- Winner

14 of 34

14th Overall Pick- Jamieson Oleksaik

Jamieson Oleksaik stands at an impressive 6'7" and weighs over 240 lbs, and he is the biggest prospect up for grabs in this year's draft. Dallas really acquired a big player in Oleksaik, no pun intended.

He is a big guy and is being compared to players like Zdeno Chara and Tyler Myers because of his sheer size. Oleksaik needs a bit more time to develop his abilities before he can hit the NHL level.

Oleksaik will need some developing in order to become a solid NHL player but his size gives him an immediate advantage.

I can only imagine the fear of an opposing goaltender once they glimpse Oleksaik lifting his stick for a slapshot.

Grade- B

New York Rangers- JT Miller Winner

15 of 34

15th Overall Pick- JT Miller

Jonathan Miller played in 48 games for the USA U-18 team in the USHL and tallied 11 goals and 26 assits for 37 points overall. Miller plays with some grit in his game and has a good shot.

Miller is a decent passer and plays well in his own zone. He is a creative playmaker and plays a solid two-way game.

Miller needs to spend some more time developing and improving his conditioning before he makes the jump to the high-paced NHL level.

He is a solid pick for the Rangers and continues with the trend of drafting American players. If he can develop the way Derek Stepan, Chris Kreider, and Christian Thomas have, the Rangers are in for a great future.

Grade- B

Buffalo Sabres- Joel Armia- Winner

16 of 34

Joel Armia is a soft-handed sniper with a big skill set. Armia has great legs and is an impressive skater.

Armia is a great two-way player with good vision and a laser-quick wrist shot. Armia loves to dig it out below the hash marks in the trenches and shows he can play with skill in both ends.

He is a lot like current Buffalo Sabre Thomas Vanek. If he can play at that same level that would be great for the Sabres.

Armia has a bright future and fits in well with the new trend Terry Pegula is ushering in.

Grade- A-

Montreal Canadiens-Nathan Beaulieu Winner

17 of 34

18th Overall Pick- Nathan Beaulieu

Nathan Beaulieu is another St. John's Sea Dog in this year's draft. He is another defenseman that slid up and down the draft board.

He is a natural power-play quarterback who moves the pick with accuracy and ease. His speed helps to complement his great skating abilities. He is a hard worker who has no hesitations in shooting the puck. He has been compared to players like Mike Green and Dan Boyle given his skill sets.

Nathan Beaulieu will only get better with age in experience, but he has proved up to this point that he is deserving of being a top draft pick.

He plays at a similar speed that future teammate P.K. Subban plays at. The Montreal Canadiens are looking to add some youth to their defense corp and Nathan Beaulieu is a great pick

Grade- A

Chicago Blackhawks- Mark McNeil- Winner

18 of 34

18th Overall Pick- Mark McNeill

Mark McNeill possesses hockey knowledge and skills that aren't taught. He has a great hockey IQ and is a creative playmaker.

McNeil is at his most dangerous in close quarters inside the slot when he uses his body to his advantage. His quick hands allow him to get off a quick shot.

He will really fit in on the Chicago Blackhawks. He fits in with the style of the Chicago Blackhawks.

His physical game comes in handy when he is working down in the trenches along the boards fighting for a loose puck.

Grade- B-

Edmonton Oilers- Oscar Klefbom- Neutral

19 of 34

19th Overall Pick- Oscar Klefbom

Oscar Klefbom is a defenseman who has a good offensive game. He is on the small side and would need to bulk up before hitting the Oilers blue line.

He could improve his game in his own end after adjusting to playing with some AHL'ers once he hits the professional level.

If Klefbom can become a bit more seasoned and can complete his game, he can be a dual threat and a future power-play quarterback who would be comfortable from unleashing his shot from anywhere.

He is a solid pick and a nice diamond in the rough for a rebuilding Oilers squad.

Grade- B

Phoenix Coyotes- Connor Murphy- Loser

20 of 34

20th Overall Pick- Connor Murphy

Connor Murphy is a typical US bred defender. He is big-framed and a solid skating puck handler. He is a work in progress as he needs some developments to his offensive game.

He is a player that is 3 to 4 years away from ever stepping on the NHL ice. He really is a big work in progress. He is going to go away to develop his craft first.

The Phoenix Coyotes could have picked a player that was closer to hitting the NHL level.

Grade- C+

Ottawa Senators- Stefan Noeson- Winner

21 of 34

21st Overall Pick- Stefan Noeson

Stefan Noesen is a dark horse from this draft. He had an explosive season with 34 goals and 42 assists for 76 points. He is played for Plymouth  and will most likely return there for next season.

If he can increase his point production at a consistent and steady rate, he will hopefully make a smooth transition to the AHL before joining the Ottawa Senators. He has been compared to Corey Perry and

GM Bryan Murray described Stefan as a hard working player who the Senators are glad to welcome.

Grade- B-

Toronto Maple Leafs- Tyler Biggs- Winner

22 of 34

22nd Overall Pick-Tyler Biggs

This was a draft day trade as the Ducks swapped for the 30th and 39th overall picks.

Tyler Biggs is a tough and nitty gritty player who uses his body against players with heavy checks to make his presence known.

Biggs has a decent shot but still requires some more seasoning before he hits the NHL level. He hopes to improve to the point where he makes it in the bigs unlike his father Don Biggs who was a career minor leaguer.

Tyler Biggs will fit in on the Toronto Maple Leafs and they will appreciate what he brings to the table.

"

Brian Burke on Tyler Biggs, " We like hostile players and Biggs is a hostile player."

"

Grade- B-

Pittsburgh Penguins- Joe Morrow-Winner

23 of 34

23rd Overall Pick- Joe Morrow

Joseph Morrow is a solid puck-moving defender. He had 49 points last season, 40 of which were assists. He stands 6' and is 197 lbs.

He is a solid player who has a good two-way game. Morrow's strengths are his passing and skating abilities which make him a dual threat on both sides of the ice

Pittsburgh was smart to draft Morrow as they have a knack for developing their prospects and than integrating them with their pro players.

Grade-B

Ottawa Senators Matt Puempel- Winner

24 of 34

24th Pick Overall- Matt Puempel

Matt Puempel is a high-octane scorer who recorded 34 goals and 35 assists for 69 points in just 55 games with Peterborough this year.

Puempel fell down the draft board after being afflicted by a hip injury. The injury kept Puempel out of action for 13 games.

The Senators really have made some good pickups in the first round of draft. They have drafted a lot of players who will really come in handy in the future.

Grade- B

Toronto Maple Leafs- Stuart Percy- Neutral

25 of 34

25th Overall Pick-Stuart Percy

What Stuart Percy may lack in size and speed, he makes up for with his hockey mind and positioning. The 6'1", 175 lbs blueliner has that has great hands and composure.

He never rushes or forces a pass through traffic but waits until just the right moment. He never appears to be lost when he has the puck on his stick. If he could improve and develop his offensive game, Percy will become a good power-play quarterback.

Percy will require a year or two of further seasoning. He needs to bulk up and improve his game a bit to adjust to the increase of talent at both the AHL and NHL level.

He was a player who was underrated at this draft but Brian Burke kept a keen eye on him and scooped him up at 25th overall.

Grade- B-

Chicago Blackhawks-Phillip Danault Winner

26 of 34

26th Overall Pick- Phillip Danualt

Philip Danault is a player who showed he is willing to work hard to improve his game. Danault made a jump from 28 games in 2009-10 to 67 points in 2010-11.

He isn't the type of winger that will stand out because of his flash or swagger, but one that has a great work ethic. He is an intense player and a great teammate that can play on the powerplay or kill a penalty when needed.

Chicago has other wingers who have that ingrained skill and Danualt will add to the grit and skill game of the Blackhawks.

Grade- B-

Tampa Bay Lighting- Vladislav Namestnikov- Neutral

27 of 34

27th Overall Pick- Vladislav Namestnikov

Vladislav Namestnikov had a great rookie season in the OHL. The Russian forward made a good adjustment playing his first year in a new country.

Namestnikov led the Knights with 30 goals, 11 of which came on the power play and averaged a point a game. He would finish with 68 points in 68 games.

Namestnikov has been touted as a solid two-way player with a great wrist shot.

This may appear to be a favor pick because of Yzerman's relationship with Slava Kozlov but Steve Yzerman knows what he is doing and Namestinikov will flourish in due time for the Tampa Bay Lighting

Grade- C+

Minnesota Wild- Zack Phillips- Winner

28 of 34

28th Overall Pick- Zack Phillips

Phillips is a solid center who made a big jump in scoring over the past two season. He went from only contributing 44 points in 2009-10 to 95 points this season. Him and Jonathan Huberdeau were quite the tandem for St.John's this year.

Zack Phillips has a high hockey IQ and is very talented. He is only going to get faster and better as he grows in an NHL system.

He will flourish in the Wild system and he is a steal at the 28th pick overall.

Grade-B+

Vancouver Canucks- Nicklas Jensen-Positive Late Steal

29 of 34

29th Overall Pick- Nicklas Jensen- Winner

Nicklas Jensen, a 6'2" winger who is an average skater weighing in at 187 lbs.

This year, Jensen put up 58 points, 29 goals and 29 assists, for the Oshawa Generals in 61 games. Jensen also contributed 13 playoff points.

Given his stats from this year, if put on the right line, he could average 60-65 points a year.

I can see him paired with Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows on a future line of two way forward scorers.

Jensen is a solid winger who will make a good adjustment to the NHL. He has good size, and if he could bulk up a bit, he could become a physical and dominant power forward.

This was a great late pickup by the Canucks as I saw him going in the top 15.

Grade-B+

Anaheim Ducks- Rickard Rakell- Neutral

30 of 34

30th Overall Pick Rickard Rakell

Rakell is an opportunist. He has some good hands and stick skills. However, he is a work in progress. He needs to develop his offensive game a bit more before he makes the turn around to become an NHL'er.

Rakell made the adjustment moving from the wing to center seemlessly so he can play anywhere at the forward position.

Once this work in progress blossoms, Rakell can be a good three-zone, two-way forward.

He fits in on the Ducks squad but is a work in progress.

Grade- C-

Who Fell of out of the First Round

31 of 34

  • Boone Jenner
  • Ty Rattie
