2012 Winter Classic: Flyers To Host Rangers at Citizens Bank Park

The Winter Classic has become the premier event during the NHL season. Every team in the league has expressed interest to either host or take part in the outdoor game, which usually takes place on January 1st.

According to CSNPhilly.com, the 2012 Winter Classic will be played in front of 40,000-plus fans at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia and will capitalize on the rivalry that has existed for years. This will be the first Winter Classic hosted in Philadelphia.

Since the New Meadowlands Stadium, Yankee Stadium and Lincoln Financial Field will not be available, the NHL was forced to move the game to Citizens Bank Park, home of the Philadelphia Phillies.

The event will also be moved to Monday, January 2 so that it will not be forced to compete against the NFL on Sunday the 1st.

This news is sure to make millions cheer in Philadelphia and New York, but will also likely bring many complaints. The Flyers have already participated in a Winter Classic (2010 against the Bruins) and this would also mark the third consecutive game to involve a Pennsylvania team and the fourth since the event started.
