Numerous news stations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area are now reporting that the Dallas Cowboys have fired Wade Phillips as head coach.
The official announcement is expected to take place during a press conference at 4pm Central time today from the Dallas Cowboys headquarters. It is expected that Offensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach Jason Garrett will be named the interim head coach.
The Dallas Cowboys came into the 2010 NFL season as heavy favorite to play in the Super Bowl, which will be held in Arlington, TX at Cowboys Stadium. Instead, the team now finds themselves with a 1-7 record following a crushing 45-7 defeat by the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.
Just last week, Cowboys owner and General Manager Jerry Jones had stated that Phillips would finish out the season as head coach, a statement that was not popular with Dallas Cowboys fans.
Following Sunday night's loss, Jones stated there would be "consequences" for both players and coaches following the defeat, meaning this might not be the only announcement coming from the team over the course of this week. Dallas defensive player Mike Jenkins has also come under much scrutiny today for appearing to quit during a goal line play by the Packers.
The Wade Phillips speculation has led to an online buzz today which proved too much for even the official Dallas Cowboys website to handle. The Cowboys travel to the Meadowlands on Sunday to face the red hot New York Giants.
