NHL Buzz: The Latest On Wade Redden, Brian Gionta, Tomas Kaberle and More
Yesterday I was exchanging messages with Rangers beat writer Andrew Gross and he told me that unless Wade Redden plays extremely well he will end up in the minors. Gross also told me that both Garnet Exelby and Alexei Semenov (who are both on pro tryouts) have a legitimate shot at making the team.
My take: No surprise here, the Rangers desperately need cap space and sending Redden to the minors would give them the space they need. As for Exelby and Semenov, the Rangers are not very deep on defense so I wouldn't be surprised if both players got a contract.
When I was exchanging messages with Andrew Gross I also asked him if Ryan McDonagh has a shot at making the team, he replied "Very much so. They were desperate to sign him this summer and the organization believes he could make the jump."
My take: No shock here, the Rangers are not very deep on defense and McDonagh seems like he is ready to make the jump.
Various media outlets are reporting Brian Gionta is set to become the captain of the Montreal Canadiens while other outlets say that is false.
My take: Gionta is not the captain as of now but it sounds like he will be within the next few days.
I asked Thrashers beat writer Chris Vivlamore about the chances of Patrice Cormier making the team, he replied "I think he does. I really want to see him once camp starts, but I think he's got a good shot."
My take: I am glad to see him getting his career on track, hopefully he returns to being a responsible two-way forward who isn't afraid to bang the body.
Mike Augello of hockeybuzz.com is reporting that he has talked to a few people close to the Leafs organization who believe there is a chance that Tomas Kaberle will be traded before the season starts.
My take: I don't know how close the people are to the Maple Leafs organization but I have asked around and this appears to be a possibility (but not likely).
