Can Henrik Lundqvist Carry the New York Rangers Through Another Season?

Nick PerriAug 30, 2010

For the previous two seasons, Henrik Lundqvist has given the New York Rangers an opportunity to play in the playoffs. Though the Rangers missed the playoffs last season, by only one point, if it weren’t for Henrik Lundqvist the Rangers would’ve been out of playoff sights in December.

“King” Henrik kept the Rangers in playoff sight, and was the go-to guy late in the season. His devotion to the Rangers was amazing, even when things got rough and he was barley given any time off. His hard work and effort didn’t go unnoticed, though; Hank was voted Rangers MVP yet again for the fourth consecutive season.

Missing the playoffs was a major disappointment for “King” Henrik. As it was the first time he has missed out on the playoffs in his career.

In no way was it his fault, though.

I never understood why Ranger fans continuously knocked on Henrik. Yes, he had his streak of bad games, but overall his play was outstanding game in, and game out. He is always ready to play and always ready to win. He was given little rest last season, especially when March came around.

In a recent interview Lundqvist told reporters that he is still feeling the “effects” from last season (2009-10). He said he felt fatigued, and he has pain in his legs. But, he also expects to be back at 100 percent by training camp.

What did Glen Sather do to help his superstar goaltender?

In the first minute of free agency, Glen Sather announced a signing of veteran goaltender, Martin Biron. This signing will bring an excellent backup goalie to the Rangers, and John Tortorella finally has a backup goalie he can trust to play when Henrik Lundqvist is tired. God forbid Hank gets injured, the Rangers have a goaltender who can take his job for a few games.

Sather also added Derek Boogaard, who should scare away opponents looking to knock into Henrik. Boogey was an excellent signing for toughness, but if Sather could add a crease-clearing defenseman before offseason's end it would help a lot.

Will Lundqvist be able to carry the Rangers for yet another season?

Well, I can’t give a definite answer; but I do predict Hank will have another good season, and once again give the Rangers a chance to play in the playoffs. I also believe he will play with more confidence, and less pressure, knowing that he has a very reliable backup goalie in Martin Biron to take his spot in case of fatigue or injury.

If you really think about it, Henrik always plays well. If the offense and defense can play well each and every game too, the Rangers will be successful.
