NHL Today: Ilya Kovalchuk, Marc Savard, Dustin Penner, Kirk Maltby, and More

Ilya Kovalchuk

It's all quiet on the Kovalchuk front this Sunday. However, Mark Everson of the New York Post has done some speculation. If the NHL were to accept the Devils' latest offer (rumored to be $100M/15 years), the Devils would have to shed $3M in cap space to fit Ilya's contract.

Therefore, trades will have to be made. Here are some players that could be traded to accommodate Kovalchuk's contract—

  • Bryce Salvador
  • Dainus Zubrus
  • Jamie Langenbrunner
  • Patrick Elias
  • Brian Rolston

Marc Savard
Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe is reporting that the league might reject Boston Bruin's center Marc Savard's contract.  With the whole Kovalchuk fiasco, there has been speculation that the league will investigate similar contracts. The league has put itself in a hole with this whole situation. They can't just pretend that these contracts don't exist (Hossa, Luongo, Savard, etc.). If they are doing this to the Devils, they should do it to every team.

Dustin Penner
Various sources are saying that the Los Angeles Kings are very interested in Oilers winger Dustin Penner. Very interesting to say the least. The Kings do need offense, but wouldn't Penner's price tag be too high?

Kirk Maltby

Gregg Krupa of the Detroit News is reporting that Maltby could re-sign with the Wings as early as next week. The veteran forward has been in talks with other teams, but rejoining the Wings is his top choice.
