The National Hockey League season is only about six weeks away and this year's rookie class looks stronger than ever.

Overall it should be a great year for rookies and there is plenty of competition ahead for the calder trophy.

The quantity of quality that is being found and produced by NHL teams now-a-days is out-standing.

Most teams have a bunch of prospects that are top notch prospects today. This is a ranking of the current top 50 NHL prospects.

1. Taylor Hall, LW - Taylor Hall was selected First Overall by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. He is certainly the best overall prospect right now and should play right away with Edmonton in the up-coming NHL season.

2. Alex Pietrangelo, D - Alex Pietrangelo holds the spot for the best Defensive prospect in the NHL. A member of the St.Louis Blues, Pietrangelo was drafted in 2008 but has yet to play a full season of the NHL. He is almost certain to make the team this season.

3. Jonathan Bernier, G - The most dominant prospect between the pipes. Jonathan Bernier could very well become the Los Angeles Kings starting net-minder next season if he out-plays Jonathan Quick. Bernier was awarded the best goalie of the year this past season in the AHL.

4. Tyler Seguin, C - Tyler Seguin was taken by the Boston Bruins with the number two pick in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. However, there are questions whether he will play this season or not.

5. Oliver-Ekman Larsson, D - Likely to play this season, Oliver-Ekman Larsson, also known as OEL, is an excellent prospect with the ability to become a legit top two defender in the near future.

6. Nikita Filatov, LW - Many questions have surrouned Nikita Filatov on whether he will play or not. However, that aside, his skill cannot be ignored. Filatov has the potential to become a goal-scoring machine in the NHL one day.

7. Magnus-Paajarvi Svensson, LW - He was considered the quickest skater of his draft class in 2009. "MPS" is a great finnesse player with great vision and hockey IQ though his ability to finish was questioned in the 2009 Draft.

8. Cody Hodgson, C - Injuries have slowed Cody Hodgson's developement down. However, he has great knowledge of the game and it looks like he will finally get his shot in the NHL this season. With great line-mates, expect Hodgson to be one of the top rookie scorers for next season.

9. Brayden Schenn, C - Younger brother of Toronto Maple Leafs defender, Luke Schenn. Brayden Schenn provides a great two-way game and holds his end of the bargain when opponents are in his zone, he is also a solid Penalty Killer, with a great scoring ability.

10.Jacob Markstromm, G - Will likely back-up Tomas Vokoun in the up-coming NHL season. Jacob Markstromm is one of the best goalie prospects right now and in the future should become a solid Number One.
