NHL Buzz: Best Bet Destination for Tomas Kaberle Is San Jose

Todd CordellCorrespondent IAugust 15, 2010

The Tomas Kaberle watch is officially on (if it wasn't already). I truly believe he will be dealt, and as of right now, my best bet is the Sharks. The Toronto Sun is reporting that the Sharks may have offered defensive prospect Derek Joslin (an offensive-minded defenseman) and a first round pick for Tomas Kaberle. Whether Brian Burke accepts it or not remains to be seen, but that looks like a pretty solid offer.

Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet is reporting that the LA Kings have moved on past Tomas Kaberle and Ilya Kovalchuk and are now focusing on Willie Mitchell. Kypreos also noted that Mitchell is expected to make his playing decision soon. Rumor has it the Capitals, Canucks, and Islanders are among the other teams interested.

Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun is reporting that Canucks GM Mike Gillis is shopping defenseman Kevin Bieksa. If the Kings can't land Mitchell, they will likely turn their attention to Bieksa.

Some believe that if the Capitals can't acquire Mitchell or Bieksa, they will turn their attention to Sheldon Souray. I can't confirm this report however, it does seem to have some legs. Additionally, both the Sharks and Capitals could be very interested in Antti Niemi. The Islanders and Panthers appear to be other options.

The Anaheim Ducks continue to search for a defenseman. Eric Stephens of the OCRegister confirmed that the Anaheim Ducks are not interested in Tomas Kaberle. His source for that was none other than Leafs GM Brian Burke.

The Dallas Stars continue to shop Mike Ribeiro. They are rumored to have offered Ribeiro for Kaberle, but Burke wants more. Whether they budge and offer up more remains to be seen. But if they don't, it is probably safe to say he won't end up in Dallas.

The Coyotes, Penguins and Islanders continue to pursue Lee Stempniak. It is believed that five or six teams are interested.

This concludes today's edition of NHL Buzz. Enjoy.
