WWE Summerslam - Current Card and Predictions

Over the past few weeks I’ve been having a bit trouble finding topics (and time) to write about our wonderful world of wrestling. I figured since I had some success with my previous WWE Money in the Bank – Current Card and Predictions…

I thought I might make a series out of it, writing a preview and follow up for every WWE PPV. That’ll make somewhere between 20-24 articles a year, right? Not to mention the other topics I’ll hopefully come up with. So sit back, relax and enjoy my newest (and first) ongoing series covering WWE’s PPVs.

WWE Summerslam

What can be said about Summerslam? As WWE’s second biggest event of the year one would think that the buildup would be tremendous, not as much but at least approaching the level of hype that Wrestlemania gets. I feel that most of the IWC will agree with me in saying that the weeks leading up to the event have been a tad disappointing, but I think the event will exceed the expectations that the (lack of) hype is providing. The WWE took a step in the right direction with Money in the Bank and I really can’t see them taking a big step backward with the biggest party of the summer. At least, I hope they don’t…

3 on 1 Handicap Match

Big Show vs. The Straight Edge Society

I know most of the IWC is probably not too happy with this match but I sure am. I’m a huge CM Punk fan and I really like this stable. They’re really hyping up the fact that the SES broke Big Show’s hand and that this is a handicap match so I wouldn’t be surprised if Big Show wipes the floor with the Straight Edge Savior and his followers. I just hope Punk doesn’t reinjure his arm with returning to the ring so soon.

Prediction – Big Show wins decisively

Diva’s Championship Match

Diva’s Champion Alicia Fox vs. Melina

I have to ask… How happy was everyone when they heard Melina’s music play and saw the flexible beauty running down the ramp toward the ring last Monday? I was giddy with excitement. Finally the Diva’s division can get good again! I can’t see them giving Melina the title back right away. I feel like they’re going to prolong this rivalry with Fox for a bit and finally have Melina regain the championship around the Night of Champions PPV.

Prediction – Alicia Fox retains 

World Heavyweight Championship Match

World Heavyweight Champion Kane vs. Rey Mysterio

This might end up being the main event. Not because of the hype of the match, but what is probably going to happen. The return of The Undertaker. Reports had the Deadman returning sometime around Summerslam so it would only make sense for him to enter during or just after this match, letting us know once and for all who really took him out, Rey Mysterio or his brother, Kane.

Prediction – Kane retains, Undertaker returns and begins feud with his brother and attacker.

Elimination Tag Team Match

Team WWE vs. The Nexus

I love elimination tag matches. I also still like the Nexus angle (seemingly one of the only ones left in the entire IWC). Therefore, I’m pumped for this match. First thing to consider, of course is the open spot in Cena’s team. It’ll probably be filled by a jobber like Evan Bourne or Ted DiBiase. I don’t think either of these will make a big difference in the match except maybe Bourne. Although, if he doesn't do anything else in the PPV, maybe The Miz will jump in here. They hinted on it on Monday Night Raw. Who knows? Secondly, I can’t imagine seeing The Nexus lose or even having any member be eliminated. If they lose it will cause the entire angle to fade into obscurity. If any member of the Nexus is eliminated then I see the others looking down on that member in the future, saying he’s the weak link and that he should be kicked out.

Prediction – The Nexus wins with a shut out

WWE Championship Match

WWE Champion Sheamus vs. Randy Orton

I’m excited for this match because of The Viper. With Randy Orton’s ability to make any match entertaining, I think we’ll finally see another good match from Sheamus. It’s about time, too. There are only a couple matches that I feel are memorable from the Celtic Warrior. And, of course, there’s now the fact that no one can interfere in the match, which of course bodes well for Orton.

Prediction – Randy Orton wins

The Miz cashes in Money in the Bank briefcase on Randy Orton, winning the WWE Championship, and beginning a feud with WWE’s Apex Predator. Calling it now.

Intercontinental Championship Match?

Intercontinental Champion Dolph Ziggler vs. Kofi Kingston

I can definitely see this match happening, especially with the build up we’ve been seeing surrounding the title in the past couple weeks. With Dolph’s questionable win with Vickie’s interference and Kingston’s fury following the match, I can see a fairly entertaining rivalry starting here. My first question is who is the heel and who is the face? My first reaction would be to say Kofi is the face and Dolph is the heel, but I see Kofi making a turn with his reactions lately. Does that mean that Ziggler is considered a face? I’d really say he’s a tweener right now but maybe he’ll slide over to the face side and dump the cougar. Only time will tell…

Prediction – Dolph Ziggler retains and dumps Vickie Guerrero

Women’s Championship Match

Women's Champion Layla vs. Women’s Champion Michelle McCool

This match is definitely a possibility, although I can’t see WWE putting two women’s matches on the PPV card twice in a row. This would finally put to rest who the Women’s Champion really is. Maybe they could throw Kelly Kelly in there to make it a three way match. Another possibility (long shot, I know) is that they’ll make the Women’s Championship into a much needed Women’s Tag Team title. Have LayCool go up against Kelly Kelly and Tiffany. Just a thought…

Prediction – Who knows? There’s just so much they could do with this!

Night of Champions

I hope we’ll have some good story lines coming out of Summerslam and, of course, leading into our next big event, Night of Champions. What do you think of the lead up to Summerslam?
