2010 NFL Draft: Detroit Lions Should Still Draft Suh

I'm going to say this once: Eric Berry is not worth being taken with the second pick.

I understand how good it might be to have both he and Louis Delmas as the dynamic-duo of safeties.  But Berry, as highly rated as he is, isn't the answer for the Lions secondary issues.

Now that I have that out of the way, I also feel strongly that even with the pick-ups of Kyle Vanden Bosch and Corey Williams, both who upgrade the Lions defensive line ten-fold, they need to have a defensive tackle with Suh's talent to be as effective and disruptive as possible.

Take Vanden Bosch as an example.  With the Titans in 2007, he had one of his best years with 12 sacks, and a lot of that could be attributed to the presence of defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.  In, 2008 his sack total dropped to 4.5 but did have 18 quarterback pressures.

When Haynesworth left the Titans to accept a huge contract with the Washington Redskins, Vanden Bosch's production dropped to only three sacks and he didn't have near as many QB pressures.

Ndamukong Suh will be that defensive tackle that will allow both Vanden Bosch and Williams to be very effective defensive ends.  Which means, teams won't be able to double any of the players on the defensive line since one of them is going to get to the quarterback.  And it's pretty damn hard to complete a pass when you are flat on your back.

Pressure on the QB will also help the secondary be more effective.  Rushed passes can lead to turnovers as well as forcing the QB making bad decisions.

Yes, I know, the Lions secondary does need upgrading as well.  But they can get secondary help later in the draft or free agency. 

Defense is going to get the Lions to the playoffs.  The offense will take care of itself.  They got the second receiver they've needed for a while...they got the QB and they got the tight end.
