We have all heard the rumors about Joe Gibbs being considered for a GM position with the Redskins.

Joe Gibbs? Joe was a great coach, but he is not general management material. After all, he was the one who pushed so hard to draft Jason Campbell.

Yes, Joe Gibbs won three Super Bowls as coach. But he wasn't the man who picked the players on those Super Bowl winning teams.

No, that man was Bobby Beathard.

In fact, Beathard was also the man that chose Joe Gibbs to be the coach in 1981.

Teams managed by Beathard, including the Chiefs, Dolphins, Redskins, and Chargers have made seven Super Bowl appearances, with four wins. The results speak for themselves.

Daniel Snyder actually had the chance to hire Beathard in 2002, but instead, he chose Vinny Cerrato. Yes, Redskins fans, things in DC would be much different now if Snyder would have taken a different path at those crossroads.

Beathard is retired now, and it is doubtful that he could be coaxed out of retirement. Then again, Snyder's money has a way of getting people motivated.

So, Mr. Snyder, if you really want to fix the mess in Washington, hiring a real football guy like Beathard may be the only way out of the hole.

Hiring a proven coach and building a solid base of young, talented players are critical needs in Washington right now. Beathard knows how to do both. He did it for the Redskins once before, and he can do it again.
