John Mara: Odell Beckham Jr. Video 'Wasn't Helpful' for Giants Contract Talks

Odell Beckham Jr. may be losing negotiating leverage with the New York Giants

According to the New York Post's Paul Schwartz, Giants co-owner John Mara said Sunday that a video showing Beckham in a hotel room, possibly with drugs, "wasn't helpful."

"I guess my response to that is I'm tired of answering questions about Odell's behavior," Mara added. "He knows what’s expected of him and now it's up to him."

Mara also said he hasn't spoken to Beckham since the video was made public, per Judy Battista of NFL.com. Battista noted Mara "did not sound totally committed to Beckham being a Giant long term." Battista added Mara said that when a team goes 3-13, there is no untouchable player.

Beckham, 25, is entering the final year of his rookie deal and will become an unrestricted free agent in the spring of 2019 if the two sides can't agree to terms on a contract extension. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Beckham is seeking a deal that will pay him $20 million annually on average.

"I know that Odell Beckham has told some people that he wants some really significant numbers," Garafolo said. "... It's not gonna be top quarterback money, because top quarterback money is going through the roof.

"... He's in the 20s. From what he has told people close to him, he wants to be in the low 20s."

However, Beckham hasn't done himself any favors with the organization this offseason and, according to one NFL agent, could be losing himself money.

"This is something," the agent told Schwartz. "You're pulling your hair out. If you're the agent you're saying 'What are you doing to yourself, it’s like you’re destroying your reputation.'"

Asked about paying Beckham north of $20 million annually at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, general manager David Gettleman offered a short and possibly telling response.

"This is America. It’s a great place. Anything's possible," he said, per the New York Daily News.

"I'm not gonna go into it, OK?” Gettleman added. "I’m not gonna talk about contracts, and what I’m always gonna tell you guys is contracts get done when they’re supposed to get done. That’s it."
