Wimbledon Tennis 2017 Men's Final: Roger Federer vs. Marin Cilic Predictions

Rob BlanchetteJul 15, 2017

Roger Federer is chasing his eighth Wimbledon title at the All England Club, with the Swiss icon facing Marin Cilic in the men's singles final on Sunday.

The No. 3 seed has continued to confound expectations after a host of top names exited contention in London.

Cilic has been excellent on grass leading up to the championships, and his consistency and pace have suited the playing surface.

However, Cilic would be confident against similarly powerful opponents, but Federer's tactics have been perfect through the two-week tournament.

Predictions

Federer enters the lion's den as most people's favourite, and he is the darling of the Centre Court on such occasions.

After the rise of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic in recent times, it was expected that Federer's days in the finals of Grand Slams could be over.

However, after injury and an extended rest period, the legend has come back stronger than ever, and his exceptional fitness levels do not suit the profile of a player in his mid-30s.

Cilic's game is based around power from the back of the court, and it is unlikely he will amend much ahead of the final.

Tomas Berdych has similar weapons to the Croatian, but he was dispatched with ease as he attempted to master the veteran's play.

According to James Gray of the Daily Express, Berdych admitted he made tactical errors in the semi-final:

"I was trying to find my way. So whatever was possible to do, then I was trying to do so. Also trying to come up little bit more to the net.

"But obviously it's very, very difficult. Roger doesn't give you any rhythm at all."

Cilic must not mirror this mistake, compromising his best chance of hurting the Swiss player's game.

Attacking the net would be a grave error against a tactician as good as Federer on grass.

The grass courts have begun to replicate much harder surfaces, and Cilic's best opportunities will come from the baseline.

Federer will pick his opponent off if any space is left to the back and corners of his desired targets.

However, Cilic has previously beaten the veteran in style, as Federer highlighted, per Metro's George Bellshaw:

Experience will be a key factor in this showdown, and Federer's overall desire will also influence the destination of the championship.

Cilic has prevailed at the U.S. Open previously, but his opponent's knowledge of Centre Court is vast in comparison.

Federer's groundstrokes have improved in the past six months, and his overall game is as fine-tuned as ever.

The Swiss player is yet to drop a set at this year's Wimbledon, but Cilic will have enough in the tank to take him deep into the match.

Prediction: Federer to win in four sets.
