China Open 2016: Thursday Tennis Scores, Results and Updated Draw Schedule

Matt JonesOct 6, 2016

Rafael Nadal will meet Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals of the 2016 China Open after he defeated Adrian Mannarino 6-1, 7-6 (6) on Thursday to book his place in the tournament's last eight.

The Spaniard soared into an early lead in Beijing before Mannarino staged a comeback attempt in the second set, but it proved futile, as Nadal finished strong to seal his spot opposite Dimitrov in the next round.

Earlier in the day, world No. 1 Angelique Kerber fell out of the 2016 China Open after losing 6-3, 7-5 to Elina Svitolina.

The German was a break up in both sets, although her opponent, seeded 16th, fought back well in each to take a memorable win. As well as Kerber, fourth seed Simona Halep also suffered a shock elimination, losing emphatically to home player Shuai Zhang.

Elsewhere in the women's draw, third seed Agnieszka Radwanska negotiated a potentially testing tussle against Caroline Wozniacki with relative ease, winning through in straight sets.

Here's a look at the results so far from Beijing. Be sure to check back for updates throughout the day as some of the biggest names in tennis continue their quests for glory in China.

Recap

Nadal's straight-sets win over Mannarino on Thursday may suggest the veteran's outing was an easy one, but after a 29-minute opening set, the Spaniard was dealt a reinforced challenge in the second.

BeIN Sports captured Nadal's storming opening set, where he surrendered a combined total of just four points across his four serving games:

From there, Mannarino offered a far more stringent response and returned from a 3-1 deficit in the second set to lead 4-3, exchanging blows with his foe but managing to keep Nadal at arm's length.

That was until the pair went to a tiebreak, at which point Nadal's stellar reaction speed came to the fore, and an acute forehand at the net saw Nadal round out a fixture that increased in difficulty as it progressed.

Following an early break of serve in her favour, Kerber looked poised to see out the opening set in this one. But to her credit, Svitolina responded well to the challenge, recovering in the next game before going a break ahead herself with a chance to serve out the opener. She took it to go 1-0 up on the top seed.

Here's the moment she clinched the opening set, having saved a staggering six break points in the process:

The second set followed a similar pattern—Kerber broke early, Svitolina responded, and the underdog once again moved into a lead. This time, she broke to go 6-5 up and served for the match.

Kerber did her utmost to cling on, saving two match points to keep her slender hopes alive. But throughout the contest, Svitolina had been the superior player, and she was able to clinch the straight-sets victory her play deserved.

As noted by tennis journalist Ravi Ubha, Kerber was a long way short of her consistent best in this clash:

In one of Thursday's most eye-catching matches, Radwanska faced Wozniacki, although the former eventually made light work of her game opponent.

Seeded third at the China Open, Radwanska is now the favourite for the title after the eliminations of Kerber and Garbine Muguruza. And she showed the credentials needed to win the competition early in this match, nullifying Wozniacki's attacking threat and dictating points herself.

Per the WTA Insider account, the Dane did her best to take the game to her opponent in the opener, although her play was strewn with errors:

After winning the first stanza 6-3, Radwanska continued to move through the gears. The second set was bristling with some tremendous shot-making from the Pole, as Wozniacki wilted physically. Eventually, the world No. 3 coasted into the quarters. Here's how she celebrated:

The draw is looking good for Radwanska at the moment, as she's the only remaining player from the top seven seeds to still be in contention for the title. That's after Halep suffered a comprehensive loss to Zhang.

Perhaps buoyed by the Beijing crowd, the Chinese player tore out of the traps in this contest, taking just 20 minutes to win the first set by a 6-0 margin. Halep was stunned and never recovered from that setback, eventually losing the second set 6-3.

As noted by tennis journalist Courtney Nguyen, there were some sloppy moments in the match from the Romanian:

Daria Gavrilova also made it to the last eight, where she will face Svitolina following a fine performance against Caroline Garcia.

Also in the women's draw, there was a win for Great Britain's Johanna Konta, who eventually bettered fifth seed Karolina Pliskova in a deciding set tiebreak after a rain-affected contest.
