In what is expected to be a sweltering, humid day in Flushing Meadows, both players will be pushed to their limits, as draining conditions will be just one more thing to contend with on Sunday evening.

Djokovic has looked hobbled at times during this tournament, including his semifinal win over Gael Monfils, in which his trainer became a regular addition to his chair on the sidelines.

Wawrinka, on the other hand, has looked plenty fresh despite playing a lot more than Djokovic, per ESPN.com's Johnette Howard:

"

The Swiss star likes to strut around and point to his temple to compliment himself for how mentally strong he is during matches, and he has earned the right. In this tournament alone, he has played a staggering 23 sets and 237 games. Djokovic, meanwhile, has played only 13 sets and a total of 118 games, putting him on a record pace for fewest sets and games in an Open era major that featured a 128-man draw and best-of-five-set matches.

"

Wawrinka is making his first-ever appearance in the U.S. Open final after two prior trips to the semifinals in 2013 and 2015. Three years ago, he was bounced out by Djokovic and last year saw him lose to Roger Federer

He is a two-time Grand Slam winner, though, with an Australian Open title in 2014 and a French Open win last year under his belt.

Djokovic has seen much more success on tennis' largest stages with 12 Grand Slam titles while boasting a pair of U.S. Open titles in 2011 and 2015.

The Serbian also holds an overwhelming advantage over Wawrinka in career matchups. In 23 prior meetings, Djokovic has emerged victorious 19 times, including their last two matches during ATP events in Cincinnati and Paris.

In terms of meetings on a major stage, though, Wawrinka was the last to win in the finals of the French Open in 2015.

But that was on the clay of Roland Garros, a stark contrast to the hard court of New York. The numbers are just as lopsided for Djokovic in hard-court meetings with Wawrinka, winning 13 of 15 matches.

While Djokovic would normally be considered the overwhelming favorite, given his past success against Wawrinka, the conditions could play a major factor in who will be lifting the trophy come Sunday night.
