Argentina Open 2016: Thursday Tennis Scores, Results, Updated Schedule
The top two seeds at the Argentina Open, Rafael Nadal and David Ferrer, kicked off their tournaments Thursday, highlighting the four matches of the day.
We'll take a look back at the results and Friday's schedule in Buenos Aires.
Results
| David Ferrer | 6 | 6 | |
| Renzo Olivo | 2 | 2 |
Ferrer, the No. 2 seed, opened his Argentina Open in dominant fashion, controlling his match against Renzo Olivo and earning an easy two-set win.
Ferrer won 88 percent of his first-service points and did not allow Olivo to break him, giving him just one break opportunity. He also controlled Olivio's serve with ease—although Olivo did manage six aces—winning 41 percent of Olivo's first-serve points and 63 percent of his second-serve points.
Ferrer played like one of the favorites in the tournament and will continue to be a favorite to reach the final.
| Pablo Cuevas | 6 | 6 | |
| Santiago Giraldo | 4 | 2 |
Eighth-seeded Pablo Cuevas cruised against Santiago Giraldo, advancing to the quarterfinals and a matchup with Ferrer.
Cuevas ripped seven aces, won 81 percent of his first-service points and was broken just once while converting four of the nine break chances he created for himself.
Ferrer is 2-0 in his career against Cuevas and has never dropped a set against his quarterfinal counterpart, per ATPWorldTour.com, so he'll be a heavy favorite. Cuevas has played well to this point, however, so Ferrer's place in the semifinals is hardly secure.
| Paolo Lorenzi | 4 | 6 | 6 |
| Diego Schwartzman | 6 | 3 | 1 |
Paolo Lorenzi dropped his first set against Diego Schwartzman but recovered nicely, advancing to the quarterfinals with a three-set victory Thursday.
Lorenzi didn't allow a single ace, converted 10 of 17 break points, held Schwartzman to four break points on nine attempts and won a healthy 52 percent of his second-serve points to preserve the victory.
| Rafael Nadal | 6 | 6 | |
| Juan Monaco | 4 | 4 |
The two players only combined for three aces (two for Nadal and one for Juan Monaco), but the victor still made his mark with the serve.
Nadal won 63 percent of his first-service points, while Monaco countered with only a 45 percent mark on his. Monaco did win 8-of-10 second-serve points, but it was not enough to make up for his issues on his first serves. It is difficult enough beating a superstar like Nadal without struggling with the serve, and that is exactly what Monaco did Thursday.
Nadal also deserves credit for seizing plenty of opportunities. He converted 63 percent of his break-point chances (5-of-8), which proved to be the ultimate difference as he narrowly escaped both sets with a 6-4 victory.
Friday Schedule and Outlook
Fifth-seeded Dominic Thiem will face Dusan Lajovic at noon ET in Friday's first quarterfinal matchup. Nadal will then play Lorenzi no earlier than 2:30 p.m. ET.
Third-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will then take on Nicolas Almagro no earlier than 4:45 p.m. ET, followed by Ferrer taking on Cuevas in the nightcap, no earlier than 7 p.m. ET.
The top seeds will all be the heavy favorites, though both Almagro and Cuevas have looked good throughout the tournament and will give Tsonga and Ferrer, respectively, a run for their money. Thiem should be the favorite in his matchup, meanwhile, as he's showed both his immense talent and resiliency throughout the tournament in Buenos Aires.
