Federer, Nadal Battle Through

Philipp Kohlschreiber pushed Federer hard in his match on Thursday, and Goffin, perhaps buoyed by the German's display, sought to do the same when he met the illustrious Swiss in the quarter-finals.
This one seemed set to be a routine Federer win as the reigning champion coasted through the first set. But Goffin was magnificent in the second, getting a foothold on his opponent's service game and forcing a deciding stanza. As relayed by Live Tennis, the usually unflappable veteran was getting frustrated in this one:
"Mad #Federer! That's not something you see every day. Roger whacks a ball into the crowd and #Goffin pumps his fist. Third straight break!

However, the top seed seemed to channel his anger into his play in the third set, racing to an early break. From that point on, the momentum was with Federer, and he eventually secured a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 win.
Federer will face Sock in the final four, as the burgeoning American recovered tremendously from a set down to get the better of compatriot Donald Young.
Young was on a high coming into this one after dispatching of Kevin Anderson on Thursday, and it was evident in the manner in which he secured the first set. But Sock showed why many expect him to go on to achieve big things, exerting his class in the second and especially the third stanzas, taking a 5-7, 6-4, 6-2 win.

Cilic faced Nadal in the match of the evening, a three-set thriller that didn’t disappoint.
The former U.S. Open champion served excellently throughout the first set, rarely looking to be in trouble against the Spaniard. Eventually, in the ninth game, Cilic snaffled a break point and grabbed an early advantage.
The Croatian continued piling the pressure on in the second, seizing an early break to give Rafa a mountain to climb. But the Spaniard upped the ante immediately, breaking back in the fourth game and hitting Cilic off the court for the remainder of the set. A break in the final set paved the way for Nadal as he eventually emerged as a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victor.

As reported by Pau Ferragut of Radio Marca, despite not being at his best at the U.S. Open earlier this year, Nadal has responded well in subsequent tournaments:
His opponent in the last four will be Gasquet, who kept his slender hopes of qualifying for the ATP Tour Finals alive with a battling victory over Ivo Karlovic, emerging as the winner in a third-set tiebreak.

The Frenchman won 6-4, 6-7(2), 7-6(6) in another enchanting encounter, coping well with the Croatian’s powerful serving throughout the clash. Eventually, he showed superb mental strength in the latter stages of the contest, holding his nerve in a tiebreak and booking his spot in the semi-finals.
As noted by tennis coach Brad Gilbert, Karlovic, while he’s played well throughout the year, seems to lack ruthlessness in high-pressure moments:
These engrossing quarter-final matches have whet the appetite for what should be sensational clashes on Saturday. Federer, having won this competition six times before, remains the favourite to take the title, but there have been enough glimpses from Nadal, Gasquet and Sock to suggest they will push him hard in Basel.
