Can Sasha Pavlovic Start At SG For The Minnesota Timberwolves?

Timber WolfSep 17, 2009

Yes, once again I am here to offer an evaluation on the Minnesota Timberwolves newest wolf Sasha Pavlovic.

On the Wolves roster, we currently have Corey Brewer and Wayne Ellington as the wings. While Corey Brewer is a stud, he's currently coming off an injury, and Wayne Ellington is a pure off-guard that's coming into his first NBA season.

Now we add Sasha Pavlovic, a SG/SF who is 6-foot-8 (good size for a wing), and very athletic.

So I've come to ask myself, "Is Sasha Pavlovic kinda like Brewer and Ellington put together?"

Think about it.

Corey Brewer is known for defense and his athleticism. Well, Sasha Pavlovic has been known as a defender that gives 100 percent every night, and with his size and length, he could wreak havoc for shooting guards.

Wayne Ellington is a pure shooter, and Sasha Pavlovic shot 41 percent from the three-point line last season.

Sasha Pavlovic also has a growing ability to create his own shot, and with more player development, he could be ready to do it consistently.

What does he bring to the Wolves?

  1. Athleticism. Correlates to dunks, and defense.
  2. Creativity. The guy is from Serbia, so you know he brings something different to the table.
  3. Sharpshooter. If he's open, he's knocking it down.
  4. Fast and Quick. If he can run with LeBron, he can run with Jonny Flynn and Ramon Sessions.
  5. An assist now and then. He averaged one assist in 16 minutes. Better than nothing....

While he's still a little bit raw, I think he has some upside left in him if he gets consistent minutes. He's at the very least a role player right now.

But why does Sasha have a chance to start?

Two words: Kurt Rambis.

It's been noted that Rambis was a key factor in the Sasha Pavlovic signing. Why? Did he see glimpses in a Cavalier-Laker game? Of course you would pay attention to Kobe and LeBron, but there's a reason why Rambis wanted Pavlovic.

I just don't know what that reason is.
