Gordie Howe Undergoes 2nd Stem-Cell Treatment to Help Stroke Rehab
Detroit Red Wings legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Gordie Howe underwent a second round of treatment with stem cells Monday as his family attempts to improve his quality of life following a stroke last October.
Ken Campbell of the Hockey News passed along the update from Murray Howe, the longtime winger's son. He said there would be no further comments until the clinical trial ends:
"Our dad continues to participate in a clinical trial where stem cells are being used in the treatment of a stroke. We'd like to wait until the first phase of that clinical trial is complete before providing any more updates. At this time, our dad is comfortable and happy. That remains our goal. We want to thank everyone for their ongoing support for Mr. Hockey.

Howe is receiving the treatment at a clinic in Tijuana, Mexico.
He made noticeable strides following the first round of treatment, and the second phase was already planned as they attempt to restore further function on the right side of his body.
Although the effort to help Howe with stem cells has seemingly yielded positive results, there's still no consensus in the medical community about its overall effectiveness. That said, the Hockey News' report states the superstar's family believes it saved his life.
Howe is expected to return to Michigan once he finishes the current trial before moving to Ohio, where he'll live in a facility tailored to individuals with dementia.
