Dodgers Reportedly Knew About Ryu's Injury Before Signing Him

Friday, May 22

Mark Saxon of ESPN reported that the Dodgers have known about Ryu's shoulder issue since before they signed him back in 2012:

"

"Surgery definitely wasn't my intention, but I think this was a good decision to do it now," Ryu said.

Ryu pitched with the injury for two seasons, going 28-15 with a 3.17 ERA. The tear showed up on the MRI Ryu had before signing a six-year, $36 million deal in December 2012, but the Dodgers elected to sign him anyway.

Ryu said the latest MRI didn't show any particular worsening of the tear, but the inflammation became more persistent.

"There have been times I was able to pitch without pain," said Ryu, his left arm in a sling, at a Friday evening news conference at Dodger Stadium.

"

However, according to Pedro Moura of the Orange County Register, Don Mattingly didn't know about the injury until last season. "They don’t tell me things like that," Mattingly said, according to Moura.

On May 21, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times reported Ryu had surgery Friday and is expected to be ready for spring training. Hernandez also reported there is little damage to Ryu's labrum.

Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reported that Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the surgery.

Ryu, who turned 28 in March, went 14-7 with a 3.38 ERA and 1.19 WHIP last season. He's won 28 games in his first two MLB seasons and has been among the most consistent fixtures in the Dodgers rotation. L.A. had scheduled the lefty to be the third man up in the rotation behind Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke.
