CSI Boston: Starring David Ortiz

Russell WightJul 31, 2009

David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez are among the 104 players who tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs in 2003.  Both were key members of the Boston Red Sox during the club's World Series championships in 2004 and 2007.

Time for an investigation?

Ortiz responded to the news, saying, "Right now, I don't have answers.  I've got no information.  The next few days, I'm going to get some information about it."  Ok, Sherlock.  Let us know how that works out for you.

Ramirez didn't seem quite as interested.  He stated, "If you want more information, you have the number for the union.  Call them."

The Red Sox say they are not going to let the situation become a distraction and will support Ortiz, especially if he starts hitting go-ahead three-run homers again.

The big, cuddly man known as "Big Papi" testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs may have surprised a lot of people.  I decided to conduct my own investigation.

As a member of the Minnesota Twins from 1997-2002, Ortiz hit .266 and averaged one home run every 29 plate appearances.

He came to the Red Sox in 2003 and suddenly became a star.  From 2003-2008, Ortiz hit .297 and averaged one home run every 16 plate appearances.  He was an all-star five times and finished in the top five of the American League MVP voting five times.

Hello, I'm a red flag.  Nice to meet you.
