Why Loic Remy Could Be Important Transfer Target for Arsenal This Summer

Arsene Wenger likes a French striker. In his time at Arsenal, he has brought in the likes of Nicolas Anelka, Thierry Henry, and most recently, Olivier Giroud and Yaya Sanogo. Now, there is speculation that he could be prepared to add another francophone forward to his stable of attackers.

With the summer transfer window just weeks away from opening, speculation is mounting that Wenger could be about to launch a bid for Newcastle’s Loic Remy.

Reports in The Metro suggest an offer is imminent. The paper claims:

Arsenal are ready to firm up their interest in Loic Remy by making a £12million bid for him at the end of the season.

Remy, who is currently on-loan at Newcastle United, has enjoyed a superb season on Tyneside, but he is set to return to parent club QPR in the summer.

And while the Magpies still hope to sign him permanently, Arsenal are also very keen on the Frenchman and are plotting a bid.

In the build-up to Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Newcastle, Wenger was asked about the possibility of bringing in Remy.  He was typically coy, telling Sky Sports: “He is a good striker. But we are focused on the end of the season, not on strikers”.

Wenger’s focus may be on the end of the season for now, but very swiftly it will turn to acquiring a new forward. Arsenal have lacked depth and variety in the final third, and Remy could offer a viable alternative to Olivier Giroud.

Arsenal fans hoping for a world-class signing might be slightly underwhelmed by the prospect of Remy’s arrival. However, there aren’t that many elite strikers on the market this summer. Wenger may have to take a gamble on a player in the hope that he can step up to the next level.

Remy certainly has the core attributes required. First and foremost, he’s quick. Arsenal desperately lack a central striker with pace. Olivier Giroud occasionally appears as if he’s trundling through treacle. By contrast, Remy has the speed required to race in behind and meet the intelligent through-balls offered up by the likes of Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla. His presence would instantly add another dimension to Arsenal’s attack.

However, he’s more than just a speed merchant. Although injuries and suspension have restricted him to just 25 Premier League appearances, he has still managed to score 13 Premier League goals.

Given that impressive ratio, it will come as no surprise that Squawka stats show him to be a more accurate finisher than Giroud. Forty-nine percent of Remy’s shots hit the target, whereas Giroud tests the goalkeeper with just 42 percent of his efforts.

He’s also a much more effective dribbler than Arsenal’s current centre-forward. Forty-seven percent of his take-ons result in him getting beyond the defender, with Giroud managing that feat just 30 percent of the time.

Although Giroud is significantly more effective in the air, Remy is a different style of striker entirely. He could play alongside, as well as instead of Giroud, and he has even played wide right for both Marseille and France.

If Arsenal cannot find a stellar name to improve their attacking options, Remy’s Premier League experience and goalscoring instinct make him a very intriguing prospect.
