Capitals' Star Alex Ovechkin Engaged to Russian Tennis Star Maria Kirilenko
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is now engaged to Russian tennis star, Maria Kirilenko.
Hockey players from across the globe continue to return to NHL ice, each with their own lockout stories. In the case of the 27-year-old Ovechkin, he is all smiles.
The left winger returns after keeping in hockey shape by playing for hometown Dynamo Moscow during the lockout. What's more, he is now a betrothed man.
It seems we are a little late to the party because he tweeted this shout of a post on New Year's Eve.
We are engaged !!!!!!! )))))))))— Alex Ovechkin (@ovi8) December 31, 2012
As for the ring, we can't tell the size or shape. Ovechkin did get this tweet off on New Year's Day though, with a tree in the background that is dwarfed by the Caps' star.
Happy New Year!!! twitter.com/ovi8/status/28…— Alex Ovechkin (@ovi8) January 1, 2013
Yahoo! Sports reports on the engagement of two sports stars, and points to a September CSN Washington report on the couple, one that guarantees there will be no issues with a long-distance relationship.
They began dating early last season, although Ovechkin admits it was a long-distance relationship at first.
We were always on the phone or on Skype, Ovechkin said. Later in the season three times she come here, so she was here a lot. Its good. Its the kind of relationship I like.
The lockout has allowed for the two to spend some more time together, and Ovechkin was in the stands rooting on his fellow Russian at the 2012 London Games, where the 25-year-old won bronze at Wimbledon along with doubles partner Nadia Petrova.
Ovechkin, in a move far more romantic than I would have given him credit for, popped the question on New Year's Eve, via USA Today.
While there is no date set for the wedding, he sounds like a fairly giddy man at the moment, joking with USA Today, "It's a good feeling. It's not that feeling anymore where you can do whatever you want. You have a girl with a tennis racket and she can hit you."
Kirilenko, who is currently ranked No. 14 in the world, was just ousted in the second round at the Apia International in Sydney.
Congratulations to the happy power couple.
